Mexico, 9 mar (EFE).-A total of 218 people have died so far of the year due to influenza A, which implies an increase of 14.1% in a week, the Ministry of Health reported today in Mexico.

In a statement said that from January 1 to March 8, 2012 is confirmed 6.414 cases and 244 deaths by different types of viruses of influenza circulating in the country, of whom 5.754 cases (90%) and 218 deaths (89 per cent) correspond to the variety AH1N1.

In this reported 37 confirmed deaths from influenza of various types, although only 13 of them occurred in the last week and the 24 remaining occurred in the previous weeks, mainly due to the delay for processing laboratory samples and reporting.

According to the release, 90% of patients who have died this year by influenza in the country were not vaccinated and 75% had complications, mainly by diabetes mellitus, obesity and high blood pressure.

The H1N1 virus was detected in Mexico between March and April 2009 and, locally, the alert by this evil remained until June 29, 2010, when there were some 1,300 deaths and more than 70,000 cases.

Currently in this country there are three seasonal influenza virus: H1N1, AH3N2 and influenza B and influenza vaccine protects against these three seasonal viruses. EFE
