Madrid, 2011-December the President of the community of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, accompanied by Health Minister Javier Fernández-Lasquetty opened last Wednesday 14 the new Institute of Psychiatry and Mental health of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos, conceived as a therapeutic space with modern and appropriate equipment especially for the integral care of patients with mental disease.

Designed in two plants that communicate each other, the new Institute directed by Dr. Juan Jose Lopez-Ibor is a modern concept of open, transparent and safe spaces that broke away in the approach of mental diseases, and that is part of the Strategic Plan for Mental health of the community of Madrid.

The Institute of Psychiatry that opens – he stressed Aguirresuma nearly 4,000 m2 to the reforms of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos, and a step further, and most importantly, in the improvement of care for people with mental illness who have promoted. ”

Center has 56 beds48 of which are conventional hospitalization and the other eight dedicated to patients requiring shorter entry stays. It also has two day hospitals with a capacity for 45 posts treatment; several rooms for group therapy, despachos-consultas for individual treatments, and four nursing controls designed specifically to keep a visual check of the common space and the corridors of the room. Also has two courtyards with open ceilings and a back garden which allows a true recreation patients during its entry, as well as clinical offices and classroom training.

With this opening is completed the reform of the North Wing of hospital Clínico San Carlos that resulted in an investment of close to EUR 55 million. Affects renewal to almost 32,000 square metres distributed over eight floors with double and single rooms and special units, as a room from acute care to patients with stroke; room ventilation mechanics non-invasive, a room of Video EEG for the study of patients with epilepsy and the white room of advanced therapies. At this stage was also expanded the emergency service which doubled its surface.

Units for specific pathologies

The newly opened Institute of Psychiatry and Mental Health boasts a total of 221 people, psychiatrists, psychologists, staff nursing, administrative, social workers, occupational therapists and keeper-serving an average of 1,000 income, around 40,000 outpatient consultations per year and nearly 4,000 emergency. For the care of these patients have several relief units specifically designed for different pathologies, while some of them share certain therapies.

The most outstanding units are of conventional hospitalization which has 48 single rooms, which attends to patients with acute psychiatric disorders that require to be entered to provide a comprehensive and complete; treatment and the unit for psychiatric observation or brief hospitalization, endowed with eight beds, dedicated to patients with acute psychiatric crisis, with a maximum time of stay of 48 hours.

Day hospitals

With these devices of revenue, the Institute has two day hospitals aimed at the care of patients in their posthospitalización and others that require a specialized intensive outpatient care. It’s the day Hospital for food conduct disorders and personality disorders and the day Hospital of psychotic disorders, both have rooms group occupational therapy and clinical offices for medical evaluation, individual treatments, therapies, rehabilitation and social reintegration with specific techniques. The food behavior disorders unit consists in addition to a therapeutic room where professionals reeducan to these patients.

Teaching and research of prestige

Finally, Aguirre emphasized the welfare and educational work of the Institute of Psychiatry and clinical Mental Health and noted that Center collaborated with the World Health Organization and form part of the Centre for research in biomedicine in network of Mental Health (CIBERSAM)created to improve clinical care for patients in all Spain ”

with regard to teaching, the Institute has 25 postgraduate students, 16 of them are resident doctors and 9 psychologists residents. It also provided training for residents of nursing specialist in Mental health. Concerning research, the Institute maintains various lines of work, as well as projects and studies national and international.
