The United Nations Organization (UN) considers equal opportunities as the process by which the General system of society, such as the environment, education, culture, housing, transport and social and health services, is accessible to all. The ability of individuals to seek and obtain dental treatment should be seen in this light.< p style = "text-align: center;" > Dentistry

people with disabilities have the same rights and deserve the same consideration that people without disabilities. Equality, quality of life and the dignity of every human being must be sacred and inviolable. But, why always seems so difficult to work with people with special needs (PNE) in Office? Where is this culture that the care of these patients should always be for persons abnegadas or who have in their life stories with this population?

learning of citizenship in our society has developed a more accentuated in recent years, yet, however, when situations not nitpicking commonplace we tend to safeguard, diverting our focus to other

activities.

this situation occurs very sharp when the theme is the person with special needs (PNE). Note-If a discomfort in the relationship with that individual; lack of birth, there is a stale biased, and this demonstrates that integration with PNE is not exercised by the company in full. It is a strategic commercial and social misconception, because studies indicate that surgeons-dentists will be sought to provide services to this population

is known by all who follow this profession, the difficulties for which pass several dental surgeons, who see increasingly scarce patients in their offices and clinics. The factors arising from this situation are various and can enumerate several, such as changing needs of the population, competition and understated values professional services, in addition to the alarming statistics of decrease in patient/professional

ratio.

The results achieved by the 2000 demographic census (IBGE, 2002) indicate that more than 25 million people, or 14.5% of the general population, have some type of disability. Assuming an average Brazilian family is composed of three or four people, would have between 70 and 75 million people involved with disabled people. Overwhelming numbers, which are coupled with other patients with special needs, whatever those needs, should raise the awareness of professionals of odontology, are by their individual characteristics or even by the sheer volume of people participating in processes of Habilitation, rehabilitation and/or inclusion are patients/prospective customers for professionals prepared to provide dental care, whether specialized minimally or

of greater complexity.

the creation of specialty Dentistry for patients with special needs, 2nd ANEO, in 2001, brought a boost to this population, but the demand is rampant, and we are just at the beginning of training of professional experts. A 2010 study, conducted in the Department of Social Dentistry Faculty of Dentistry of the University of São Paulo showed that, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, only three entities promoting this speciality courses. The frame is still, so to speak, more atrocious, to note that less than half of the faculties of dentistry dedicated to their undergraduate hours of study and regular clinical

on the topic.

traditionally, dentistry has been focused on educational and motivational techniques to prevent or control oral diseases. Dental professionals have sought, in turn, “cake recipes” in their private practices, in order to provide patients with effective treatment programs, but “cake recipes” for patients with special needs require imagination, experimentation and research, so to achieve a realistic plan of treatment is necessary in the dentist be willing and:

interesting This is the opportunity that will appear in the future for few surgeons-dentists serve more PNE, those willing to refrain from stigmas and prone to a change in its status quo. These considerations demonstrate that there is much to do in favor of this population, and brings in his heart a point not always discussed and practiced in our vocational training: the exercise of

sensitivity.

the dental class, participation of its members both personal as professional perspective, as a member of that society, in all its segments: leaders, teachers, students and professionals of all specialties have a unique opportunity to change this frame. We cannot let this opportunity

despite the difficulties implicit in the suggestions, the benefits achieved by the surgeon-dentist in attendances are explicit:

  • more patients in the Office
  • Recognition on the part of patients and families
  • sense of challenge and satisfaction for their efforts
  • When the dentist completes a query it will know that worked hard to give the best for a patient needing
  • a hug or a smile from a special patient helps the dentist to feel better about yourself
  • Allows a stimulus to his professional practice
  • special treat patients is good for the patient, to the profession and to the dentist.
