Andalusia, 2011-September The Ministry of health, through the technology transfer Office of the public health system in Andalusia (OTT-SSPA), participated in a Conference in Madrid on ‘ public procurement of innovative technology in biotechnology ’, framework in which presented the business opportunities offered by the health Andalusia to the companies in the biotechnology sector.

The event, organized by markets Biotecnológicos platform in collaboration with the Spanish Association of Biocompanies (Asebio), focused on the most relevant aspects of the public procurement of innovative technology, i.e., that which is acquired and that necessarily entails an associated technological development. The objective of this day has been that companies in the sector are aware of the operation, management, legal and institutional framework for public procurement and the requirements and steps to be followed by the companies to carry out a public purchase with public administration.

In this regard, the director of the technology transfer Office, Javier Montero, described the potential of the public health system of Andalucía and its ability to generate new business opportunities in the field of biotechnology. The interest of biotechnology companies in the field of health by Andalusia has grown in parallel to the consolidation of the public health system as an organizational model of quality, with high levels of scientific and medical excellence and whose size equals that of some European countries. These characteristics make it an ideal environment for the development of products and quality technologies and the proliferation of agents involved in the generation of knowledge in close relationship with the Andalusian health.

In this context, the Office of technology transfer is the link that promotes public-private partnerships and effective strategic alignment within the Andalusian health system in order to generate greater competitiveness and lower risk projects.

Javier Montero, highlighted the role assumed by the Office of technology transfer, nexus of different models of collaboration established between the health system and private entities, which are aware of the business opportunities that can find and develop in this environment.

Finally, the director of the OTT explained the portfolio of services that offers the sector and will manifest the activity being done by this institution, whose purpose is the effective translation of the results of health research to citizenship through various formulas such as licenses, agreements of collaboration or even creation of biotechnology-based companies.

Since the beginning of the year, the Office – located in the heart of the Andalusian progress public foundation and health-, has closed the agreement of other four operating licences and 61 records of intellectual property, of which 20 are international patent applications have been made.

These results must be added ten collaborative arrangements that have been signed with different companies in the biotechnology sector that finance both projects of research groups of the public health system in Andalusia as their service delivery.
