(www.neomundo.com.ar) officials of the Ministry of health of the nation of the Argentina and the regional adviser on chronic diseases of the Pan-American Organization of health (PAHO), Alberto Barceló, agreed today that “both at the global level, and the Argentina, chronic diseases are an epidemic”, at the time who expressed that “obesity and cardiovascular disease are the greatest concern”.

“More than 50% of Argentines have excess weight, and although it is a trend at the global level, we can spare no efforts in the prevention of these disorders that cause thousands of deaths,” said the Undersecretary of regulation and supervision of the health portfolio in argentina, Andrés Leibovich. Leibovich said that “non-communicable chronic diseases pose a very strong problem from epidemiological, social, and economic point of view as they primarily affect low-income people”, said Recalling that the impact of these diseases will be a central theme of the forthcoming Summit of Presidents of the United Nations, which will take place next week in New York”.

In the same vein, Barceló considered that “the unusual increase in the occurrence of these diseases is reaching epidemic levels globally and Latin America, especially in the countries of medium- and low-income”.

The expert considered that that reality was due “to the increase in the risk factors such as the increase in the consumption of food hypercaloric, the decline in physical activity and the consequent increase in obesity, what makes appearing most frequently diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular”.

Barceló argued that “the national survey of risk factors – by the Ministry of health of the Argentine nation in 2009-, indicates that diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure has increased in recent years, at the time that recommended”increased physical activity and healthy eating, the decline in smoking, reducing the consumption of alcohol as strategies to prevent these conditions.
