Almost 7 per cent of the population over 49 years can submit arterial calcification.

a study by the Instituto Universitario de Investigación en Atención Primaria, IDIAP Jordi Gol, examines the prevalence of arterial calcification and cardiovascular risk factors in adult population.

-The study demonstrates that a simple test such as the ankle-brachial index allows to diagnose arterial calcification

-people with arterial calcification are between 2 and 3 times more likely to suffer from angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, ischemic accident or a stroke

Spain, April 2012.- the study is the first nationwide to study the arterial calcification and its diagnóstico through a test as simple as the measure of the index ankle-brachial you can do from primary care consultations.

results

included a total of 3.786 people, the median age was 65, and more than half were women (53.9%). Found an index ankle-brachial higher or equal to 1.4 in 235 people, (this value of 1.4 is the one who sets the dianóstico of arterial calcification) representing a prevalence of 6.2%.

Subjects with arterial calcification had a greater proportion of background in cardiovascular disease, smoking, and had more difficulty to perform any type of physical activity.

According to the authors of the study, “the results of the work suggest to cardiovascular risk in people with an equal or greater than 1.4 ankle-brachial index is superior to the people with a normal ankle-brachial index.” Stand out in the same way that “the use of easy proof implement, reliable and cheap as it is the calculation of the index ankle-brachial can help detect patients with high cardiovascular risk in primary care consultations”.
