during the closing of the institutional Act of the SEN speech and face some difficult years for the healing by the announced cutsSancho Rieger Jerónimo Dr. stressed the importance of the role of the specialists to distinguish the necessary of the superfluous and to take advantage of existing resources optimally.

Madrid, April 2012.- For the tenth consecutive year, the Sociedad Española de Neurología (SEN) held at the Royal Academy of exact and natural sciences and natural of Madrid, its institutional Act, a day that counted with the presence of a hundred scientists, researchers, private individuals and representatives of various associations and societies. The economic crisis and the difficult stage that occurs for the health in the coming years, were the themes that marked the closing speech of the institutional Act, carried out by Dr. Jerome Sancho Rieger, President of the SEN.

This year 2012 is a difficult year for health and they will surely be the next, but we believe that, in these times of crisis, when greater effort needs to be done, explain and agree measures, giving greater cohesion to the system. For this reason, we are steadfast defenders of a Pact for health, in which the scientific societies participate as partners ”, Sancho Rieger Jerónimo Dr., President of the SEN said. But, although we are in times of crisis and therefore cuts, neuroscientists, we must try that you cuts are mortality and improve the use of neurological resources. We advocate that in times of crisis the specialist, and in this case the neurologist is which can better distinguish the necessary of the superfluous, and that can better exploit existing resources ”.

In addition, Sancho Rieger Jerónimo Dr. recalled that neurological diseases are the most prevalent in our country, increasing together with the development of society and the increase in life expectancy. Recently the mortality statistics have pointed to cerebrovascular diseases as the second cause of mortality, the first women, registering a significant increase in deaths related to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. So if they are grouped together by neurological causes deaths are the leading cause of death in our country ”.

Sancho Rieger Jerónimo Dr. also wanted to make a reference to the growing interest in neurology among future professionals. Neurology remains a very requested by the MIR future specialty. This year among the specialty chosen by the first 100 MIR, Neurology has been the fourth most requested specialty – tied with Pediatrics – and only after cardiology, plastic surgery and dermatology ”.

During the institutional Act made delivery of the 2011 Awards SEN, a few awards that reward the scientific and social work in the field of Neurology, have developed associations, researchers and individuals. In addition, were granted awards to activities with teaching accreditation, the biennial prize of Dr. Grau-Veciana, the Neurowikia Awards, the Honorable mention of the SEN and the accreditations of Honor members of the SEN, among others. Sancho Rieger Jerónimo Dr. thanked all the award-winning her outstanding work in favour of Neurology.
