More than 8,000 people suffer from some sort of hereditary ataxia in Spain, according to data of the society Spanish of Neurology.

, September 25: day international of the Ataxia.

-Because the number of patients with ataxia represents a small percentage of the population, they are fairly unknown society diseases. The Sociedad Española de Neurología (SEN) would like to take this date to provide a social recognition for these diseases to boost research and development of effective treatments

Spain, 2011-September next September 25 commemorates the international day of Ataxia, a date which aims to promote social awareness to the heredodegenerativas Lazo. Although currently there is no official statistics, the Sociedad Española de Neurología (SEN) estimates about 8,000 people suffer from some sort of hereditary ataxia in Spain. Its relative low impact makes such diseases are nearby within the Group of rare diseases and, therefore, at present, there a deep social ignorance of them, which conditions are not allocate sufficient resources for their research and development of new treatments.

Under the term Lazo heredodegenerativas encompass over 40 types of degenerative diseases of the nervous system characterized by loss of balance and coordination in the implementation of voluntary movements. Generally are gradual, evolutionary, diseases highly disabling for which there is no curative treatment.

Usually, the hereditary ataxias are usually classified according to the way in which they are inherited: recessive autosomal (which include the spinocerebellar, also called SCA Lazo), autosomal dominant (as Friedrich’s Ataxia), ataxias associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and the linked to chromosome X.

Due to the wide variety of ataxia heredodegenerativas referred to within this term, the symptoms of these diseases is very varied, however, the lack of coordination of movements, which can affect any part of the body, is common to all of them feature. This lack of coordination can manifest itself in the lack of balance, a lack of coordination of the upper limbs (limb loss) or the deterioration in the control of eye movements or the muscles involved in speech. “ Although some types of ataxia are more severe than others, it is important to note that within a single type, not all patients will have the same severity of disease. In some cases the symptoms are mild and with a slower progression, while in others the disease may be more aggressive and lead to an early functional inability. But the truth is that they can start with a lack of balance small and end up being highly disabling ”, drew the DRA. Rosario Luquín Piudo, Coordinator of the Group of study of disorders of the movement of the SEN.

The Lazo heredodegenerativas tend to develop more often during childhood and adolescence, and as it happens with many degenerative diseases of the nervous system, there is currently a definitive curative treatment for these entities. However, “ many of the symptoms and complications associated with these diseases can be treated. In this way, although they are incurable diseases, that is can help patients to have a good quality of life as long as possible ”, ensures the DRA. Rosario Luquín Piudo.

“ Heredodegenerativas ataxias are very cruel diseases and, unfortunately, very neglected both by society and by the scientific community. For that reason it is so important that, for more than ten years, will commemorate this date. September 25, allows that, at least for one day, these diseases and their affected charge the visibility they deserve ”, concludes the DRA. Rosario Luquín Piudo.

Physiotherapy is essential to maintain the physical and functional autonomy in each stage of Alzheimers.

the physiotherapy is essential to maintain the physical and functional autonomy in each stage of Alzheimer’s.

on the occasion of the world day of Alzheimer.

Madrid, September of 2011. The vocal of the General Council of physiotherapists schools of Spain (CGCFE), Iban Arrien Celaya, on the occasion of the celebration of the World Alzheimer’s day, has stressed the importance of physical therapy to maintain a greater degree of physical and functional autonomy in each stage of Alzheimer’s disease, thus improving the quality of life of the patient and his family.

Alzheimer’s disease is an irreversible degenerative disease, which is the leading cause of dementia in Spain and affects 1% of the individuals under 65 years of age, with a higher prevalence in women.

Among other symptoms, the disease produces initial alterations in attention, memory, and temporal-spatial orientation. These symptoms are added to secondarily alterations in language, motor and the emotional disorders, as well as alterations of sleep, sexual function and appetite; delirious phenomena and hallucinatory; and neurological symptoms.

People affected by Alzheimer’s disease symptoms very variable even though the most frequent are driving deprogramming, limitations in learning, muscle stiffness, muscle weakness, respiratory problems and lack of collaboration, among others.

The great capacity of crippling disease, the need of changing and permanent care, the severity of complications, the change in structure and family dynamics are, among others, differentiating aspects that require coordinated, accessible and comprehensive responses by society as a whole.

As explained Arrien Celaya, as the disease progresses, the person concerned requires care by different healthcare specialists, including physiotherapists. To do so, the physical therapist specializing in neurology, which is in constant training, works integrated within a multidisciplinary therapeutic team consisting of professionals from different areas, offering comprehensive, individualized and specialized treatment.

Physiotherapy treatment must be revised and adapted regularly at every stage of the disease, as emphasised Arrien Celaya. Addition, it is important to achieve appropriate physiotherapeutic care physical therapist to establish health education programmes both to the person concerned as their family and caregivers, so that they better known disease, its risk factors, and patterns of physical and functional treatment to follow at home.

CGCFE

The General Council of physiotherapists schools of Spain (CGCFE) is the body that represents more than 40,000 physiotherapists, in Spain, dealing with the common goal of promoting the health of citizens. In addition, orders the profession, guardianship the interests of physiotherapy, as well as its optimal implementation and universalization.

Physiotherapists are health professionals, as foreseen in existing legislation, accredited with the University degree in physical therapy, taught at 43 universities and holders of knowledge and skills designed to benefit the health of the population. Furthermore, there is a greater number of doctorates and masters, to ensure their high qualification.

Between 5 and 10 per cent of the population over age 65 suffer Alzheimers disease, according to experts.

Between 5 and 10 per cent of the population over age 65 suffer Alzheimer’s disease, according to the experts.

from the Neurology unit of USP Marbella warns that this percentage will be doubled by 2020 as a result of the ageing of the population.

Marbella, 2011-September Alzheimer’s disease affects over 700,000 people in Spain, and it is estimated that each year 100,000 people develop symptoms of this disease. However, as warns Dr. Manius Von Maravic, head of the Neurology unit hospital USP Marbella, the exact number of people who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease is not known because many people are not diagnostic. “ However, we can conclude that roughly between 5 and 10 per cent of the population over 65 will suffer from this disease ”, says the expert. The ageing of our Western society makes this estimate percentage is double in year 2020 and reach triple within 40 years.

“ Disease is the most shocking of the elderly, the most common cause of disability, dependency and death in this stage of life. Alzheimer’s disease is a dementia and cause between 60 and 70 per cent of all dementias. Dementias understand all illnesses that generate the brain disturbances causing impairments of memory and intellectual function with evolution of at least 6 months ”, explains Dr. Von Maravic.

From the Neurology unit of USP Marbella, emphasis on Alzheimer’s disease is a disease of the brain, not the mind. It is a neurodegenerative disease that produces progressive and irrepressible death of neurons or brain cells.

The most relevant symptoms that can alert us to a case of Alzheimer’s could be the following:

-loss of memory.

– questions frequently repeated.

-difficulty naming or referring to objects common.

– concerning the place forgotten where have placed the things.

-disorientation in places known.

-loss of orientation with respect to time.

-lost interest and before the activities of life.

-disabilities and difficulties to perform life tasks daily.

-claim ever more aid.

-personality, mood changes and humor.

-progressive loss of verbal expression and writing for

In any case, symptoms do not appear all at the same time, if not that developed slowly and gradually.

“ The diagnostic process is not as easy as it may seem at first. Practitioners use various procedures of diagnosis such as a battery of neuropsychological tests to study the degree of impairment of memory and intellectual capacities. Moreover, it is highly recommended to conduct a study of the brain or MRI image for degenerative changes and to rule out other causes of dementia such as advanced vascular processes, brain tumors etc …. ”, continues Dr. Von Maravic.

The Hospital del Mar features a virtual microscope of last generation for the training of future professionals of the medicine.

The Hospital del Mar features a virtual microscope last generation for the training of future professionals of the medicine.

-the new microscope virtual, unique in Catalonia, and educational purposes only in Spain, opens up a path towards a new telemedicine. Allows you to create virtual sessions of work between the doctor, the student and the consultant, speeding up a process so far, conditioned by the limitation of access to the preparation of the tissues to analyze

-samples of tissue scanning helps students self-education and tutoring at a distance. They have access to more amount of information, especially in exceptional cases samples, thus enriching their learning in pathology

Spain, 2011-September the Hospital del Mar has incorporated a new team of microscopy which manages different platforms of virtual images. The program combines a team of scanning of histological and cytological preparations to 400 increases with high resolution, even can reach 1,000 increases, allowing virtually working with an image as if it were to the microscope. This system has a first teaching purpose. The students, from home, can check a particular histological preparation and all related information, including radiological and macroscopic images, as well as all kinds of complementary techniques. There is a library with reference images, an atlas where the cases are classified and the teacher can create online courses and tests. This versatility in the management also allows to improve agility in the consultation of the information. Now, through a simultaneous connection, you can create virtual sessions in which the consultant has access to the information immediately and speeds up the process of diagnosis. The Hospital del Mar is one of the European pioneers in incorporating this technology for teaching purposes, along with two French centres and one central European.

This program, called Aurora Interactive, has been developed by McGill University of Montreal (Canada) and is an interactive teaching tool that has many other potential applications in courses in anatomy, histology, radiology, as well as courses in clinical setting. On the other hand, the aperio scans whole system sample tissue to be analyzed with a goal of 20, 40, 63 x, multiplied by the eye increases just allowing 400-600 increases which allows the virtual microscope, obtaining a reproduction of the sample comprised of small pictures in high resolution. “this program reads any histological digitized reproduction”. We can study the preparation to large increase without is pixele and with precise control of the camp where we are. Gets more quantity and quality of information because it does not act as a zoom, but as a powerful microscope. “As a result, can move through the reproduction of the preparation much more limiting analysis” explains Dr. Sergi Serrano, Chief of the service of pathology and responsibility for teaching of the Parc de Salut MAR.

Thanks to this new equipment, unique Spain educational purposes, the formation of the student of pathology has given a big step toward excellence. Now, teaching combines both the use of the analog conventional microscope and virtual microscopic system. “The information of pathological anatomy is very complex, so using virtual microscopy we ensure quality training.” Before, the teacher had to go through each microscope to keep track of the observation of the student. In addition, there were only a limited number of copies of the samples. Now, the new system allows you to make a much more careful monitoring. The teacher makes sure that is identifying the student through each monitor. We find that there has been a simplification of the process but it carries a great enrichment for students. The new management of the virtual microscope does not limit your skills with a conventional microscope. The purpose of the course is to acquire competence in the diagnosis of pathological anatomy. “The student already has other spaces to develop their skills with a conventional microscope”, says Dr. Serrano. The scanning of the new agenda system gives access to tissue samples of rare cases which, in other circumstances, could not be so as not to damage them. “The student has the opportunity of easy access to many samples of pathology.” You can now access more complex images and treat only cases. “Soon became a certain number of copies with the biopsy sample of the patient, by limiting its practical use”, continues Dr. Serrano. The new scan program also offers teaching collections both for pathology residents and residents of other specialties that allowed both the self-education as the tutoring at a distance.

Another application of the virtual microscope is its ability to store samples. In the case of some preparations of glass with a given weight is necessary to think of an alternative to the physical limitations of passive files. On the other hand, the interconsultation is another direct application of the virtual microscope which opens a path to telemedicine. The new system exceeds the physical and technical constraints that had so far. “Before, the sample is called distance through a camera incorporating a microscope.” Now, this new tool is more promising. There is a simultaneous connection between the doctor and the consultant and you can create virtual working sessions in real-time, facilitating and expediting the consultations “.

The Hospital del Mar and the teaching of pathological anatomy

The Mar Hospital is a teaching hospital focused on medical research; He attends pathologies of medium and high complexity and develops projects that apply science daily to the health of the people it serves. The hospital is a health institution with an integral formative offer ranging from vocational to university degrees and the formation of medical specialties, people and knowledge to be two capitals of the utmost importance to the institution, and for this reason, Hospital del Mar offers all resources to preserve them and promote them.

In this context, the pathology service is key to improving the quantity and quality of clinical screening. It is one of the central services posed a fundamental pillar of the Hospital. The analytical, samples of all kinds, surgical handpieces, pass through this service any organ, tissue, fluid body has a space, both diagnostic and therapeutic for research purposes. Alterations or cellular injury of tissues and organs and its structural and functional impact on the body, determining in the detection of possible diseases are being explored.
