The clinical practice pioneering surgery to treat epilepsy

The Epilepsy Unit of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona has performed the first implant in Spain a system of deep brain stimulation for patients with refractory epilepsy, as reported by the Centre in a statement.

Refractory epilepsy is one in which seizures persist despite appropriate medical treatment with several drugs, which in Spain have 30% of the 400,000 patients with epilepsy.

A variable percentage of patients – about 15% – will be candidates for resective surgery, and the rest should be used other procedures such as deep brain stimulation.

Unit Epilepsy Clinic, coordinated by Mar Carreño, is the only accredited Catalonia and Spain by the Ministry of Health for the surgical treatment of this type of epilepsy, the neurosurgeon who performed intervention of Parkinson’s Epilepsy Program and the Hospital Clinic Jordi Rumi on 21 July.

Specifically, this therapy – Medtroic provided by the company – has been used for over 20 years for other treatments in neurological diseases, and should be implemented in the brain’s thalamus.

To make the implant is used that emits electrical impulses neurosimulador controlled and directed to an area of ??the brain: the anterior nucleus of the thalamus, an area that has strong connections with other parts of the brain involved in the generation and propagation of seizures.

The new treatment is indicated for reducing the frequency of seizures in adults with refractory epilepsy and partial seizures with or without secondary generalization.

A recent study showed results of this therapy “promising” because after two years of stimulation, the crisis fell by an average of 56%, including the most serious.

With the decline in seizures, the patient experiences a significant improvement in their quality of life and regain some of their autonomy for activities of daily living.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), epilepsy affects approximately 50 million people worldwide and almost a third do not respond well to antiepileptic drugs.

Why are cavities in children?

Cakes trigger the onset of dental problems among the ‘kids’

Estimates by the World Health Organization , between 60 and 90 percent of schoolchildren have dental caries , one of the most common diseases among children. Children are one of the groups most at risk because they tend to eat more often, eat more candy and also not being experts in the brush as the ‘older’, are not aware of the importance of brushing their teeth after every meal. For this reason, it is the job of the parents be aware the importance of caring for children’s teeth, whether the milk (much more ‘cuddly’ and therefore susceptible to decay more quickly destroy them), or definitive.

This monitoring is especially important during Christmas , nougat , marzipan , chocolate shortbread and become the main enemy of the dental health of children as small bacteria in the mouth have destroyed the sugar in candy, making acids that attack tooth enamel. The more candy children eat, the more likely to suffer tooth decay. The solution, however, is to eliminate the Christmas menu: simply limit (remember that sugar consumption should not exceed 10 percent of total calories you eat one child per day), offering more healthful alternatives, and reminding them to brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste always eat something sweet. Among the most ‘damaging’ to the teeth include the soft sticky (especially among children with braces), as they are easily attached to the brackets , causing bacteria to stay there long. Similarly, hard Christmas candies are very dangerous, whether you eat slowly sucking because it produces a long exposure of teeth to sugar as if they bite, they can fracture the fragile infant or destroy teeth fillings. The sweets are less harmful to teeth are softer, non-sticky, for example prepared from chocolate and nougat.

Experts recommend a first visit early to avoid the ‘sin’ associate the dentist with a bad experience

Facing new and unknown things (especially if sitting in a barber’s chair or a dentist) is always an adventure for the ‘sin’ of the house, which sometimes can be seen as a small ‘trauma’ unless we take appropriate action. For this reason and to avoid tears and unpleasant experiences , experts recommend that the first visit by children to the dentist as soon as possible: neither 1 nor 2, the ‘sin’ should first visit the dentist after the age of 3 years , and always as a routine visit or ‘check’, before there is a problem.

The first contact of children with your dentist should be linked to something nice (where possible), so as not to associate the clinical and chair of a specialist with an assault or a negative or painful experience. From there, experts recommend regular visits, two per year will be sufficient to detect any problems that the ‘sin’ may arise in their teeth , and that, normally, and at this age tend to be mostly the dreaded cavities . And this is the main dental condition that can occur during the first years of life, but is unlikely to occur if we take care: Typically, only children with a genetic predisposition or poor oral hygiene, tooth decay can begin to develop after the age of 4 years. The way to ‘fight’ from near the cradle: teach them to maintain proper hygiene habits from 2 years, a balanced diet low in sweets, and regular intake of fluoride, which strengthened from ‘little ones’ the fabric of their permanent teeth, which mineralization begins virtually at birth.

Do I have to put equipment in your teeth?

Keep in mind that while aesthetics are important, health is even more so. If the child does not chew properly, in the long run this may cause digestive problems
Experts say there is no specific age for recommending orthodontics, as it depends on each particular case.
It is increasingly common to see both children and adults with braces on the street. The dental care has become more than just a health issue and tends to take precedence over aesthetics, especially in older people, the dental health care. It is likely that your child has misplaced teeth, but this is not the only reason that orthodontics should be placed, the placement problems of the jaw also require this type of treatment. If your child’s upper jaw is bigger than the bottom there is what experts called overbite . If, however, this occurs in reverse, is called an underbite.

Major advances in orthodontics

in both cases is producing a malocclusion, which is the way for dentists to define a bad bite. This causes the occurrence of the misalignment of teeth.

The dentist says Lourdes Garcia Payo “There is no specific age at which it is recommended the use of orthodontics depends on each particular case. What is necessary is that the process of permanent dentition is complete and is not mixed, ie there are no teeth and final at the same time, but the final denture is completed. ”

What a disappointment

is normal to break the news to the child that you have to put “appliance” this represents a tremendous disappointment for the small, but the technique has advanced in all fields of life and of dentistry was not to be less, so it should be explained that besides being extremely beneficial for him in the long run, there are already clear braces, or a color very similar to the teeth to disguise their use. Even depending on the type of the little problems you have, there are braces that can be placed in the back of the teeth and are not. We must remember that aesthetics are important, but health is even more so. If the child does not chew properly, this can be a cause of digestive problems in the long run, why is so important that the professional is the need to evaluate where the small oral.
