Barcelona, June of 2011. Melanoma is becoming, increasingly, in a major public health problem, since that incidence rates have increased in a manner considerable1. According to a study led by the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, the child is the most important time of life for the formation and evolution of the nevus (moles). The presence of a greater number of nevus at early ages could predict a higher risk of developing melanoma. The study shows that children who had suffered sunburn were much more often over 50 nevus, unlike those that were not quemado1.

Currently, melanoma is the type of most serious skin cancer that exists, unlike cancers basal or squamous, cells that are the most frequent. Although melanoma has a lower degree of incidence than other types of skin cancer, has the highest rate of mortality and is responsible for 75 per cent of deaths from cancer of piel4.

Has been assessed that the children receive three times more UVB radiation to the adultos3 and it is estimated that exposure received during childhood is about 50% of the exhibition received throughout life; that is why that should be enhanced solar habits, that damage accumulates gradually in the skin and this recalls Burns, particularly those received in childhood. According to the skin cancer Foundation the use of a fotoprotector during the first 18 years of life 78% reduces the likelihood of developing skin cancer in a futuro5.

4 ’ 5 Million children trained in photoprotection

In order to curb the harmful effect of the Sun on children, ISDIN puts the progress the school campaign of Photoprotection to continue raising awareness to school children about the risks involved in exposure to the Sun without proper protection.

This year, ISDIN celebrated the sixteenth edition, which consolidates its position as the largest photoprotection of all Spain awareness campaign. In this edition the campaign scans through the platform online www.isdinsunlab.com; a teaching space created to assist in the continuing education of photoprotection of pupils in primary education. So it is also present in the network with its official Facebook page www.facebook.com/ISDIN.official, YouTube, www.youtube.com/user/IsdinSunLab and Flick r, www.flickr.com/people/isdinsunlab.

As points out Juan Naya, Director-General of ISDIN, “ this campaign responds to the need to educate the population about the Sun and the protection of the skin; the education of children in this age is especially crucial for its future and is necessary to complement the education programmes for health ”. The Spanish pharmaceutical collaborate in schools, with teachers and educators, to transmit good habits of photoprotection. “ this work of dissemination and awareness-raising joins other initiatives ISDIN carried out as a social commitment for better health of the skin ”, stresses Juan Naya.

Proof of this are more than 4 ’ 5 million children who have already participated in this initiative. The campaign continues to educate children on the importance of caring for your skin, to prevent skin problems when they are older.
