Mediosysida form to young journalists to improve information on HIV and AIDS in Spain

according to the latest study by Mediosysida and the Institute of communication from the UAB, yet 36% of the information about the pandemic confuse the terms HIV and AIDS.

Barcelona, September 2011.- since that in 2006, Mediosysida made the first study about the treatment of HIV and AIDS in the media of Spain, this project continues to work with young journalists and future professionals of the communication in order to improve the social image of HIV through information published in the media. For this reason, on 24 October take place in Barcelona II workshop HIV / AIDS and young journalists in the 21st century, a space for dialogue, debate and reflection on the treatment of information about HIV and AIDS in the Spanish media.

When marks 30 years of the first case of AIDS in our country, even today the terminology of this disease still mistaking Spanish press; In addition, when we talk about AIDS, continues stigmatizing people and linking them with some vulnerable groups.

Maria Urrero, project coordinator, explains that to analyze the journalistic pieces has detected that it is the young journalists who make more mistakes in the language and tend to use discriminatory language when writing about HIV and AIDS. This fact, continuing Maria, “ has some logic because it is a specialized topic and unfortunately AIDS continues to be a socially stigmatized disease ”. Madrid, 2011-September A group of researchers from the community of Madrid describes a new congenital immunodeficiency, which helps to understand the development and the role of T lymphocytes in a work published in the journal The Journal of Clinical Investigationwhich are those who coordinate the immune response of the organism. The study can help to improve the approach of other patients with severe congenital immunodeficiencies.

Immunodeficiency has been detected in two babies of different Ecuadorian families who were respiratory infections, diarrhea, delay in growth and low lymphocyte count. The work shows that there is a mutation not previously described in the gene that encodes the protein CD3delta, which is part of the receptor Antigen of lymphocyte T with which these cells identify pathogens to eliminate them.

The mutation affects cells “Tab” whose function is well known, but not the “diagnostic” believed to be a primitive but versatile t-lymphocyte type The work highlights the importance of studying the two types of cells as in the case of both babies, lymphocyte count was not so diminished in other serious immunodeficiencies, something that can confuse the diagnosis and delay unnecessarily the transplant.
