Australia and the EU will linked their CO2 emission trading schemes

Sydney (Australia), 5 sep (EFE).-Australia and the European Union (EU) will try to link their systems of trade in emission of gaseous pollutants, said today the first Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.

After the meeting with the President of the European Community, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, Gillard said both agreed to initiate a dialogue to discuss the measures “that can be taken together” with the aim of unify trading systems of CO2 emissions “in the future”.

“Both Australia as the European Union recognize that carbon markets are the most effective way of reducing the gases that cause the effect greenhouse and thus create jobs in the clean energy sector,” said Gillard in joint in Canberra press conference

EU pioneered a GHG emissions trading system (ETS) greenhouse is six years.

At the same time, the Australian Government has intended to adopt a new tax of about 23 Australian dollars (around 17.2 euros) by emission of one tonne of CO2, which already has the necessary votes in Parliament, from the next year.

This tax will annually increase by 2.5% in real terms until 2015, year that give passage to a scheme of trade in emissions similar to that of the EU where the international market will set the price.

Durao Barroso considered that the trade in emission of gaseous pollutants is the “most effective” way to combat climate change, in addition to become “a great environmental opportunity” of doing business, the local news agency AAP.

The two leaders also discussed issues related to the global economy, the liberalization of markets and a possible Treaty of cooperation between Australia and the countries that form the EU.

This agreement is expected to sign next month, “will serve as a framework for the different areas of our flourishing cooperation”, he said the President of the EC.

Durao Barroso began yesterday, with the Commissioner of the climate, Connie Hedegaard, an official visit in two days, Australia while next Wednesday will travel to New Zealand where it will stay until 9 September.

The tour focuses on a greater economic cooperation in forums like the G20 (a group of developed and emerging countries) and continue talks to curb change climate.

Next to Hedegaard, will participate in the Forum of the Pacific Islands from 6 to 7 September in Auckland (New Zealand), where they will meet with leaders of countries in the Pacific, for which the European Union (EU) is the second largest donor of aid.

Australian scientists linked the leukemia with a new kind of genetic defect

Sydney (Australia), 5 sep (EFE).-A group of Australian scientists discovered that a new type of hereditary genetic defect is present in the people who are prone to suffer preleucemia and acute leukemia, reported today means premises.

This flaw – that predisposes people to develop mielodisplásticos syndromes (MDS), known as preleucemias, and acute myeloid leukemia – consists of a mutation in the gene GATA2.

This gene regulates the activities of others involved in the production of cell white.

“The discovery of this gene allows to identify, monitor and treat people that are very likely (to suffer acute leukemia) in advance,” said the local agency AAP Hamish Scott, of the Centre for biology and pathology of cancer Australia of South.

Patients with myelodysplastic syndromes, characterized by the inability of the bone marrow to produce healthy, cells usually develop severe anemia and require constant of blood transfusions

About a third of those affected with the SMD develop acute leukemia, a disease that if it is not detected in time can kill the life of the patient in a few weeks or months.

But with the discovery of the genetic defect scientists can develop new tests to diagnose both diseases and seek new forms of treatment.

Biology and pathology of Cancer Center already developed tests to detect the gene, while in United States is developing clinical trials related to these diseases.

This discovery was made possible by genetic testing of a family of the city of Adelaide which had blood disorder and that it is the largest related with this genetic defect known to date, added AAP.

Research, which was published in the scientific journal Nature Genetics, was funded by the National Council of health and medical research, the Council of the South Australia cancer, Leukemia Foundation and the University of Adelaide.

Pulmonologists warn that menthol cigarettes increase addiction

Madrid, 5 sep (EFE).-menthol cigarettes increase tobacco addiction and carry a greater health risk than the traditional ones, as he has warned a group of pulmonologists expert in smoking, calling for prohibition of menthol as an additive in these products.

Menthol smoking favors, creates greater dependence and hinders the abandonment of tobacco, as he explained in a press release Dr. Sigismund Solano, in the service of Pneumology of the Hospital Gregorio Marañón in Madrid and one of the three authors of the study.

This is so because menthol gives the feeling of a breathing more fresh and deep, and acts as an analgesic local softening the effect of smoking on the tract respiratory.

According to Solano, mentholated cigarettes encourage smoking as “facilitate” the Act of smoking to inexperienced smokers or those who reject the roughness of the tobacco.

In an article in the prevention magazine of the smoking of the Spanish society for Pneumology and thoracic surgery (SEPAR), this group of pulmonologists underlined also that tobacco addiction is higher among smokers of menthol cigarettes that between the traditional, that the first need to smoke first cigarette in the morning much earlier.

Solano has also ruled that menthol cigarettes are more healthy.

“Often has wanted them to relate to the benefits associated with medicinal remedies to basis of menthol, and presented as a healthier alternative, but has been demonstrated that this idea is completely false and always smoking is harmful to health”, explained Solano.

Finally, the authors of the article have alerted on the largest number of extra-thin Mint tobacco smoke particulates, which implies higher risk of myocardial infarction, so have recommended authorities ban on menthol as an additive in cigarettes.

“ clinical features and the absence of electrical, neuroimaging and analytical signs indicate that paroxysmal episodes do not correspond with an illness or injury neurological, cardiac, or systemic ”..

Vitamin C is good for something?

Vitamin first were the dangers of excessive doses in some multivitamins, later studies denying antioxidant properties of vitamin d, and finally more than 55 studies which would halt the alleged benefits compared to the ‘ common cold ’

is it possible that vitamin C does not serve even to prevent the cold?

history: from ‘ anti-escorbútico factor ’ to universal panacea

thanks to surgeon John Woodall (1617) met the medicine the ‘ anti-escorbútico factor ’ that he kept the lemon and as soon as they extended his fame that already in the 18th century the Royal Navy became treatment required the use of oranges and lemons in cases of scurvy (a disease caused by lack of vitamin C).

Is already in the 20th century when Casimir Funk (1912) identified this factor anti-escorbútico as vitamin C, although they take more than 20 years to isolate and eventually to synthesize. Achieving something we owe to Tadeus Reichestein and Walter Norman Haworth (1934), who succeeded perhaps what made that vitamin C is a product of massive sale: a process of synthesis cheap, quick and simple. Now that same year the Hoffman – La Roche pharmaceutical company released the first compressed under the name Redoxon, has sold up to our days.

But no doubt if this vitamin jumped to stardom was the prize Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling, who came to recommend to have a long and healthy life ingest on a daily basis between 6,000 and 12,000 milligrams, when today the World Health Organization recommend not exceed 45 mg/day.

65, 55 Studios, 232.060 patients and no effect:

The Cochrane Library journal conducted a meta-analysis (a study of various studies) which used dose of 200 mg of vitamin C (or higher) and a placebo-control (i.e. equal pills but without the active ingredient) gave to more than 232.060 patients.

The most striking outcome of these studies was probably that 23 communities studied did not find any measurable clinical effect in the prevention of the common cold. Despite this conclusion, it seems that there are 6 small studies that demonstrates a slight anaphylactic effect (i.e., to avoid getting cold) in the sports of high competition and low temperatures. Probably were these five studies in which Pauling was based to recommend such doses of vitamin C, because vitamin C intake decreased by 14% day symptomatic.

Despite these six studies, the other 49 showed that vitamin C does not have any clinically demonstrable effect or significant in the prevention, reduction of symptomatic days or the common cold symptoms.
