The Provincial Hospital in Madrid exposes its experience in intra operative radiotherapy.

El Hospital Provincial exhibited in Madrid his experience in radiotherapy intraoperative.

Castellón, 2011-September the director of the Oncology Institute of the Provincial Hospital, Carlos Ferrer, participated last Saturday at a seminar held in Madrid in which outlined the results of the application of intraoperative radiotherapy, a complex technique that is used for the treatment of cancer and consists of radiate directly to the tumor during surgery.

The technique is performed in about fifty hospitals worldwide, of which four are Spanish, among them the Provincial.

“ Intraoperative radiation therapy combines the action of the surgery and radiation therapy, techniques that support and complement each other to be able to heal different types of tumors that present difficulties for complete resection or have a high risk of relapse ”, explained Dr. Ferrer.

For the application of intraoperative radiotherapy dosimétricos studies are performed before surgery to determine more accurately the location of tumors and can thus influence through a beam of accelerated electrons on the affected area at the time of this operation.

Intraoperative radiotherapy allows treatment in cases of very high complexity, as relapse rectal tumors, Sarcoma of soft parts, gynecological tumors, breast cancer and tumors of the gastrointestinal tract.

It is a multi-disciplinary technique that requires the collaboration and coordination of a team of anaesthetists, surgeons specializing in Oncology, plastic surgeons, radiation, pathologists, physicists and nurses of these specialties.

The advantage of this therapeutic method is that it allows to join a single dose of high radiation treatment of cancer during surgery in a not resected tumor or in the surgical bed and without affectation tumor normal tissues are displaced from the beam of radiation, added Dr. Ferrer.

Normally the patient undergoes surgery in which he removes the tumor and is later when treated with radiation therapy with the linear accelerator, which can be extended for several months, so this technique implies a considerable decrease in the time of treatment.

For the implementation of the technical specialists of the consortium made previously a training period in other centers with experience who have delved into the definition of the procedures of work, adaptation, infrastructure, equipment and the necessary coordination of the multidisciplinary team involved.

The SEIMC rejects the inclusion of Microbiology and Parasitology in the trunk of laboratory and clinical diagnosis.

The SEIMC rejected the inclusion of Microbiology and Parasitology in the trunk of laboratory and diagnostic clinical.

after making public the draft Royal Decree on core subjects.

-the Spanish society of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases has presented its arguments to the Ministry of health, Social Affairs and equal

-La SEIMC believes that specializing in microbiology and Parasitology has very few points in common with the rest of the specialties that have been integrated into the trunk of laboratory

Madrid, 2011-September the Spanish society of infectious diseases and microbiology clinic (SEIMC), comprising the majority of clinical microbiologists and Spanish specialists in infectious diseases, has been expressing their opposition to the inclusion of the specialty of Microbiology and Parasitology in the so-called trunk of “ laboratory and clinical diagnosis ”, as established in the draft Royal Decree for the regulation of the criteria for core subjects in the formation of certain specialties. Therefore it has presented their arguments to the Ministry of health, Social Affairs and equal.

Microbiologists of the SEIMC specialists, homogenization of the common core training will imply that the knowledge and skills of the specialists are substantially minors in relation to the current model, and therefore the degree of complementarity among the members of the multidisciplinary teams is also lower.

For Álvaro Pascual, President of the SEIMC, “ the area of knowledge of Microbiology and Parasitology “ has no common or cross-cutting skills and has very few points in common with the other disciplines that have been integrated into the trunk of “laboratory diagnosis ”, doing well”little viable and efficient from the point of view of training, the Organization of this trunk ”.

The SEIMC, however clarifies, that this fact is not in opposition to the current management of the laboratory of clinical microbiology that occurs in some Spanish hospitals, and responds to a purely organizational matter. In the field of Microbiology and parasitology, the laboratory is simply a workspace, specialists in Microbiology have, moreover, an extralaboratorio functions dedicated to the clinical study of infection, the diagnostic and therapeutic guidance with public health implications which represent an important part in their formation.

Also, the SEIMC highlights that, despite the arguments put forward by the Ministry in the draft Royal Decree there is no consensus on the inclusion of this specialty in the trunk of laboratory and clinical diagnosis. In this sense, all the other actors involved, such as the National Committee of Microbiology and Parasitology – resigned from a year ago for this reason – responsible units teachers and residents in training have been always contrary to this new organization.

The society also exposes that the maintenance of the speciality of Microbiology and Parasitology out of the trunk of clinical laboratory would not have any economic consequence. On the other hand, this new organization of the specialty would mean the expansion of the training period to five years, which would lead to an increase of up to 30% of the total costs of training.

“ The existence of laboratories, as a single point in common between different specialties may not condition the Organization and its training programs ” adds Álvaro Pascual. The President of the SEIMC insists that only the areas of knowledge and competences are which should define the content and development of each specialty, needs care that each one of them should satisfy.

The SEIMC has set out its arguments to the Ministry and hoped to reconsider its decision, so that finally the speciality of Microbiology and Parasitology is not included in the trunk of laboratory and clinical diagnosis, shall be considered as another of non core specialties.

One in five Spanish would feel embarrassed if your child has lice.

One of every five Spaniards feel ashamed if your child has lice.

6 of every 10 believed that dirt in hair increases the risk.

-Pediculosis information center reveals the false beliefs of the population before the beginning of the school year

-half of the population still used vinegar as a treatment, despite the fact that its intense smell provokes rejection of children

Madrid, 2011-September almost one in five Spanish ensures that you feel embarrassed in the event that your child I had lice, according to the Filvit survey on Pediculosis drawn up by the Spanish society of Pediatric Extrahospitalaria and primary care (SEPEAP) and Pediculosis information center. The poll, conducted among 2,000 people, is the first of these features is carried out in Spain.

More than 4.5 million children have started these days his classes in pre-school and primary levels, ages more susceptible to infestation due to the habits of game. 4 of every 10 households with school-age children ever had lice, according to the survey. “ Return to class is a critical time for the transmission, which becomes especially necessary protection, since many children return with lice on vacation and the conditions of heat and frequent contact between heads make leads to infestation ”, says Dr. José Luis Bonal, President of the SEPEAP.

The survey highlights some fasos myths surrounding the pediculosis, as the fact that 6 of every 10 respondents associated the dirt of the hair at the risk of infection. “ Lice have nothing to do with hygiene, socioeconomic and lifestyle habits. What is more, they show some preference for clean hair ”, says Dr. Charles Marina, Pediculosis information center.

Two-thirds of Spaniards believe that lice can be controlled by cutting the hair. The Navy doctor indicates that single method is effective if he shaved his head completely, “ a method which would be excessive, since that would affect self-esteem and contribute to stigmatize the child ”. When it detects a case, “ should be treated with shampoos and lotions pediculicides and clothing that has been in contact with the person concerned should be washed at 60 degrees. Children and adults in the environment must apply a protective product from pharmaceutical dispensing ”, adds. Protectors Act on the scalp forming a protective film. When one of these parasites detected the presence of the Ombudsman with its receiving antennas they saturate and do not want to live in the hair.

Vinegar, outdated

More than half of respondents confesses that he has resorted to the vinegar to deal with the invasion of lice, “ an effective remedy to remove the nits (eggs) but not as much to remove lice, and that it is rejected by children due to its intense smell ”, warns Dr. Aurora war, head of the Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid Dermatology. As noted by this specialist, “ there are products in the pharmacy both treatment and protection from the pediculosis with pleasant smell for children, which affects adherence and prevents becomes one reason of stigmatisation ”. In this regard, half of those interviewed felt the smell as an important characteristic when choosing a pediculicida or a protector against lice. Although August and September is when more pediculicides dispense in pharmacy, only 1 of every surveyed 10 says to go to the pharmacy in search of advice or treatment in the event of pediculosis.

Parents seem to be aware of the need to inform your environment before a contagion. 8 of every 10 claims that they avisarían to school if you discover that their children have lice and also would take protective measures with the rest of the family to avoid contagion.

However, 3 of every 10 parents say that they would take his son to school for a few days in case of presence of lice, the same percentage that ensures that it would draw his son of the Centre before an infestation if it should recommend it. “ Is not necessary that children not going to school. In the event that our children have lice simply dealt with and report to the school, and when other children are affected is sufficient to use a protective product ”, points out Dr. Jesús García Pérez, Member of the SEPEAP.

Pediculosis information centre is an initiative of the SEPEAP in collaboration with Filvit, which has a web of information and consultation: infopiojos. It involved pharmacists, educators, physicians and parents worried about the health of their children.
