the departments of health Torrevieja and Vinalopó (Elche) begin the campaign of vaccination against influenza

-The Ministry of health has designed 33,000 doses for Health Department, Torrevieja, and 25,200 dose for the Department of health in the vinalopo Valley, according to the population of each area.

-practitioners of both departments will have a campaign made to measure: “ get vaccinated, it is your responsibility to ” is the motto of this initiative that aims to inform and raise awareness about the importance of the vaccination as a guarantee for the protection of patients and family members attended every day.

Torrevieja, 2011-September Torrevieja and Vinalopó (Elche), health departments have begun vaccination against seasonal influenza 2011 campaign.

The Ministry of health has allocated 33,000 doses for Health Department, Torrevieja, and 25,200 dose to the Department of health in the vinalopo Valley, according to the population of each area. The number of vaccines in both departments has increased slightly over the previous year.

Thus, since yesterday, citizens have more than 20 points of vaccination in both departments to go to immunize influenza, health centres and clinics.

Risk groups for which recommends the vaccine inoculation are as follows:

-all persons 60 years or older, especially those who live in institutions closed.
-people under the age of 60, to present a special medical condition with a high risk of complications from influenza or because the disease can cause a descompensacióhis condition n medical.
-people who can transmit influenza to those which have a high risk of complications.
-people who work in essential public services, with special emphasis on the forces and security forces of the State, national, regional or local unit, firemen, civil protection servicespeople who work in public health emergencies and services workers in correctional institutions and other centres of detention by judicial decision.

Campaign tailored for health professionals

Workers in health centres, both primary care such as hospital, are a group of risk to which it is recommended, especially the administration of the vaccine. In the case of medical professionals, vaccine inoculation is highly recommended, especially for those who care for patients of some of the high risk groups for which it is advisable to vaccination.

Health professionals can be asymptomatic carriers during the incubation period, spreading without realizing the people around them.

With this objective both health departments have launched awareness-raising campaign “ get vaccinated, it is your responsibility to ” that, through informative talks aimed at health professionals, aims to inform and raise awareness about the importance of vaccination as a guarantee for the protection of patients and family members attended every day.

Seasonal influenza, so what?

Influenza is transmitted from person to person through respiratory secretions. The period of transmissibility extends from 24-48 hours before the onset of symptoms until 5-6 days later. The incubation period is 1-5 days.

Annual vaccination is the main prevention measure against the flu, still need to be vaccinated every year because the strains that make up the vaccine change from one season to another.

The effectiveness of the vaccine is approximately 80%. The main objective of the vaccination campaigns is to protect groups at risk in which the disease is potentially serious its complications.

3rd WORLD HAI FORUM on nosocomial infections: call for a global mobilization against the resistance to antibiotics

3rd WORLD HAI FORUM on nosocomial infections: call for a global mobilization against the antibiotic resistance

September of 2011. More than 70 international experts in medicine, infectious diseases, microbiology and epidemiology have gathered recently on the occasion of the 3rd “HAI World Forum ”, organized at the initiative of the bioMérieux entity in the Conference of the Foundation Center Merieux.

“From all the continents, gathered experts have launched an appeal to the international authorities, the medical community, veterinarians, the diagnostic and pharmaceutical makers and the population, to undertake a global mobilisation to prevent a health catastrophe caused by the spread of all antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

In a context in which the development of new antibiotics is practically at a dead, the resistance of bacteria has spread due to the massive and inappropriate use of antibiotics in human health and animal. Not only treating common infections may be compromised, but also those pathologies treated with immunosuppressants, or even surgery (organ transplants, heart surgery), involving a high risk of bacterial infection.

For experts of the “ World Hai Forum ”, the emergence of bacteria with NDM-1 panresistentes and the epidemic by e.-coli affecting Europe last spring, be regarded as first-rate health alerts, announcing the birth of a new “ was of antibiotics ”, requiring an awareness on a global scale. Preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics, however, belongs to the field of sustainable development.

One of Spanish professionals who attended to the “ World Hai Forum ”, Dr. Rafael Canton, Chief of the microbiology service of the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal, Madrid, agreed that this initiative multidisciplinary and multinational approach the reality of different countries and unifying criteria and efforts in the fight against the resistance to antimicrobial drugs is necessary and essential. Also noted the efforts daily laboratories and microbiology services in Spain that with its current structure they represent one of the first steps in the detection of problems, offering this information to other professionals and participate in multidisciplinary teams of infection control

Following the precepts and proposals for large agencies (who, ECDC, CDC, etc.) and scientific societies (ESCMID, ASM, SEIMC, …), the Forum participants identified priority guidelines, which should implement in the short and medium term, to combat the spread of resistant bacteria. To do this, already tabled twelve very specific recommendations that will help to combat this scourge effectively.

Priority guidelines that health authorities should put in place

-Only may be administered to animals antibiotics that are not used in human medicine, and only for therapeutic purposes. It is crucial to book the classes of antibiotics most important for human medicine.
-Prohibit, in all countries, the use of antibiotics in the animal feed to accelerate their growth.
-Regulating the sale of antibiotics for human medicine and ban their sale without a prescription at the global level.
-Propose to the international organizations (who, EU) specifications for the proper use of antibiotics, who must sign the ministries of health in all countries, and of course, undertake to obey, comply with and enforce.

Animal and human health

-Implement, in all countries, a standardized control of resistance and use of antibiotics, as well as to monitor the outbreak and spread of new bacterial resistance.
-Include, in the plans of College of physicians and veterinarians, a solid background on bacterial resistance and reasoned use of antibiotics. Establish programmes of continuing education of health personnel according to the customs of each country.

Healthcare

-Designing rapid tests, which can be used at home or in health centres by doctors, so they guide them in the prescription of antibiotics and determine that it is not an infection of viral origin.
-Boost r & d of new antibiotics
-To develop new economic models that reconcile the interests of public health and the demands of profitability of the sector.

The population

-Carry out information and awareness campaigns aimed at the general public, which are adapted to the consumption patterns of the population, and showing the need to protect the antibiotics by limiting their indiscriminate use.
-Enactment of hygiene key measures such as washing hands to prevent infections. Strengthen the implementation of health teams aimed at eliminating the resistant bacteria present in wastewater imperatively.
-Involving consumers in the drafting and implementation of plans of action.

About …

The 3rd “ World HAI Forum ”, organized from 27 to 29 June 2011 by bioMérieux, and dedicated to nosocomial infections, highlighted by the geographic diversity of its participants: 33 countries from different continents were represented.

While the majority of the symposia focused on the scientific developments past, the World HAI Forum, held every two years, allow the experts exchange views on issues that have not been nearly discussed at other conferences or meetings.

On this occasion, and given that much of the time have dedicated it to share experiences, successes and failures on the fight against Multiresistant bacteria, attendees have been able to develop plans of action tailored to the needs of public health.

Leader worldwide in microbiology and a pioneer in the field of screening of resistance and the antibiogram, bioMérieux is working in close collaboration with the health professionals in three areas of control of nosocomial infections and bacterial resistance of antibiotics: prevention, surveillance and intervention. Almost 75% of patients admitted for heart failure presents an inappropriate nutritional status

almost 75% of patients admitted for heart failure presents an inappropriate nutritional

according to a study published in the latest issue of Spanish journal of Cardiology (REC)

-After analyzing nutritionally, for fifteen months, patients hospitalized in Hospital Reina Sofía of Córdoba, of heart failureIt was found that 13% was malnourished, 59.6 per cent were at risk of malnutrition and only 27.4 per cent presented a correct nutritional

– the State of malnutrition, most common among women, was associated with a greater cognitive impairment, a higher degree of renal failure and lower figures of index of corporal mass and prealbúmina (a type of proteí)(na)

-mortality at 25 months of follow-up of those who were suffering from malnutrition was, in absolute terms, 57% higher in relation to those who showed an adequate nutritional state

-the study confirms that the nutritional status of patients with heart failure on a regular basis should be assessed upon entering the hospital, is possible that nutritional intervention could improve their Outlook

Madrid, 2011-September the Spanish Cardiology Society (SEC) advises the high prevalence of cardiac insufficiency (CI) among the Spaniards, affecting 10,000 people by each million inhabitants, which implies that it is presentapproximately 1% of the population. Despite the progress made in their treatment, heart failure continues to produce a high morbidity and mortality, is therefore vital to find aspects that could improve the patient’s evolution.

In this regard, the unit of management clinic of cardiology at the Hospital Queen Sofia of Córdoba has developed an observational, analytical, and prospective study published in the latest issue of Spanish journal of Cardiology (REC), to demonstrate the influence of malnutrition in the prognosis of the patient’s heart failure.

To this end, made a comprehensive nutritional study that included anthropometric, biochemical parameters and survey Mini Nutritional Assessment (Nam), all patients admitted to the Centre of a CI between January 2007 and March 2008.

Each patient body mass index was calculated and assessed their body composition through the fold tricipital as an indicator of fat tissue, and muscle perimeter of the arm, as an indicator of muscle tissue. For the analysis, it was necessary to record the weight (in kilograms), the height (in centimeters), the fold tricipital (in millimeters) and the brachial average circumference (in inches). Measures were obtained in the visit to the patient the day of discharge, in accordance with the standardised methodology.

According to the rating of the Nam poll, 13% of patients with CI was malnourished, 59.6% were at risk of malnutrition and only 27.4 per cent presented a proper nutritional state.

The percentage of patients with cognitive impairment was greater in the Group of malnourished patients. In addition, presented a worse clearance of creatinine (renal grade) and lower hemoglobin figures (Metalloprotein blood that transports oxygen from the respiratory organs to tissues). This group also the percentage of women and the average age was higher than in the other two groups. With regard to the nutritional estimation parameters, patients who are undernourished according to the Mini Nutritional Assessment Survey presented under albumin and prealbúmina and a body mass index figures significantly lower.

The total mortality of patients classified as malnourished according to the survey score was 12, 25 and 32 months of follow-up, 56, 76 and 80.8% respectively; among patients at risk of malnutrition, the 23.5, the 35.9 and 42.4%, and between patients with adequate nutrition, the 11.3, the 18.9 and 26.6 per cent, so mortality at 25 months follow-up of those who were suffering from malnutrition was, in absolute terms, 57% higher for those who showed an adequate nutritional state.

The study confirms that the assessment of nutritional status should be integrated definitely as a fundamental part in the comprehensive evaluation of patients with heart failure, and can help improve your forecast.

According to Dr. Juan Luis Bonilla pigeons, a member of the SEC and optional specialist in cardiology at the Hospital Queen Sofia of Córdoba “ to date, widely knew how the IC was influenced in the nutritional status. Its best known effect is what classically referred to as cardiac cachexia, fruit of the catabolic state imposed by disease and whose treatment is currently none other than the IC itself. However, analysis in reverse, i.e. how the nutritional influences on the CI, offered many questions. Modestly, our study is a landmark in this area as evidence of disadvantage that malnourished IC patient facing his illness. The causes of this relationship are not enlightened although it is very possible that it is linked to the already commented fact concerned a consumptive chronic disease requiring a catabolic state. Thus, patients with worse nutritional status is a more fragile, vulnerable and worse prepared patient to deal with the disease. However, the result of our study suggests a really interesting question is if nutritional intervention aimed at optimizing the nutritional status of patients with malnourished IC could improve its outcome. The response to bring her future clinical trials designed to that effect. Only a favorable outcome would lead us to include this intervention as part of the comprehensive approach to the patient with IC ”.

Heart failure is the inability of the heart pump blood to a suitable volume to keep the needs of the human body, generating respiratory weakness. The heart may fail because of an own problem or because their reaction ability fails to satisfy what the Agency demands. Diseases such as coronary ischemic disease, valvulopathies, arrhythmias or ailments that affect the heart muscle can cause heart failure.

A new guide to the WTO will help doctors to prevent fractures and save costs to the health system

a new guide to the WTO will help doctors to prevent fractures and save costs to the health care system

The document has been prepared by the College medical organization and has the support of the Ministry of health, Social Affairs and equal

fragility fractures involve a high cost (up to 11,000 euros) to the health system and its consequences in women after menopause significantly affect their quality of life. With the help of the “ Guide to good clinical practice in Osteoporosis Postmenopáusica. Prevention of fragility fractures ”, published by the College medical organization (WTO) and presented yesterday, your primary care doctor may prevent fractures by fragility in a practical and simple way

“ the objective of these guidelines, in addition to helping the formation of the physician to promote the decision-making process and improve the quality of careIt is to help save costs to our health care system. All prevention helps to reduce costs and in the case of fractures by osteoporosis, these can be up 11,000 euros for our health care system ”.

Madrid, September of 2011. Yesterday presented the “ Guide to good clinical practice in Osteoporosis Postmenopáusica. Prevention of fragility fractures ”, a document created with the aim of updating the knowledge of medical professionals and guide them in the management of these patients.

As highlighted by the Coordinator of this guide and Treasurer of the Medical College Organization (WTO), Dr. José María Rodríguez Vicente, “ the objective of this guide, in addition to helping the formation of the physician to promote the decision-making process and improve the quality of careIt is to help save costs to our health care system. All prevention helps to reduce costs and in the case of fractures by osteoporosis, these can be up 11,000 euros for our health care system ”.

While this is a bone disease that can affect both men and women, these are people her with greater due mainly to the reduction in estrogen associated with the arrival of the climacteric. Thus, only Spain estimates affecting 35% of women over 50 years and 52 per cent of those who have already fulfilled the 70.

As familiar with their high incidence, family physicians and gynaecologists have worked together in this new document, drawn up by the College medical organization (WTO), with the support of the Ministry of health, Social policy and equality and the collaboration of Pfizer and Almirall. “ Hope that this eminently practical guide will help the professional to the decision-making process, providing it accurately and schematic options of diagnostic and therapeutic attitudes based on scientific evidence and criteria only professionals ”, explains Dr. Jose Maria Rodriguez Vicente.

To provide a truly practical guide, its more than 100 pages address the problem of this disease of high prevalence from a realistic perspective. “ We have teamed up with the clinical, health and social context in which we operate, and what we would like with this guide is improving the efficiency of resources and control costs, while maintaining the quality of care, in one of the diseases most prevalent in our times, such as fragility fractures ”, says Dr. Santiago Palacios, President of the Iberoamerican society of osteology and Mineral bone metabolism (SIBOMM).

The pharmacological option appropriate to the patient

One of the purposes of the new text, is to update the knowledge of physicians about new treatments antiosteoporóticos. In doing so, addresses pharmacological options that have been recently approved and carried out a review of the characteristics of all of them, as it is the case of bazedoxifeno, a new modulator selective of the receptors of estrogen (SERMS). In addition, extends this information exposing other avenues of treatment, such as bisphosphonates, strontium ranelate, the denosumab or calcium and vitamin D.

The Guide’s authors warn of the advantages and risks associated with each of them, as well as specify what is the most recommended depending on the characteristics of the patient attending the consultation.

On osteoporosis

Osteoporosis, which literally means “ porous bone ”, is a metabolic bone disease in which bone density and quality have become weaker, in such a way that increases the risk of fracture. Bone loss occurs as “ quiet ” and progressive, so usually no symptoms until occurs the first fracture, hence the importance of early detection and treatment. The most common fractures associated with osteoporosis are the wrist, hip and vertebral, while those who have more serious consequences for health are these last two.

It is estimated that it affects 75 million people in Europe, United States and Japan. Overall, in the year 2000 the osteoporosis caused around 9 million bone fractures in men and women with 50 or more years of age, of whom 3.12 million occurred in European population. In addition, it is in the years immediately after menopause when there is a greater risk, since at that time it can produce up to 20% loss of bone mass that will experience a woman in his life.

The treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis may significantly improve the health of millions of people around the world and reduce the health and social costs associated with this pathology.
