While this legendary first voyage failed their destination tests were performed, their direct action and nonviolent captured the public imagination, managed the cancellation of future nuclear tests and was the first spark of a movement which grew up and became the largest environmental organization independent of the world.

And added: “Not we can expect that politicians continue discussing and wasting opportunities to reach an agreement on how to prevent the worst ravages of climate change.” We need leaders with vision to take bold decisions to halt climate change and protect the most vulnerable to its effects. “We need active citizens requiring this to their corporate and political leaders”.

Current model of the anti drug struggle “is out of stock”, say experts

Mexico, 14 sep (EFE).-the current model of anti-drug fight that uses violence “is exhausted,” said today the participants in the Latin American Conference on drug policies held in Mexico, to highlight the need to devise a new strategy.

“The effects of such policies are not expected, since they generate many more damage than it solves,” he told Efe Graciela Touze, President of the asociación civil exchanges, one of the organizers of the event which ended today.

For two days, more than 300 experts from 40 countries, representatives of non-governmental organizations, legislators, politicians, or drug exposed their experiences to find a solution to the problems that generate the drug.

“Have been dealt with many issues, given the complexity of the matter, and it has come to the conclusion of the need to think about new models of regulation.” “The current one, based on prohibition, does not give results and generates more problems that it solves,” asserted.

During the Forum, spoke of the need decriminalize consumers, some of whom are imprisoned for carrying small quantities, which leads to overcrowding in the prisons.

“There should be a criminal prosecution punish organized crime, but must be distinguished from the chain’s weakest links”. “Proportionality of penalties has to depend on the amount that would take,” noted.

Between the presentations today agreed the Álvaro Henry fields Solórzano, Deputy Minister of Justice and public security of El Salvador, who raised that the legalization of drugs does not automatically solve violence “because, as with legal products, there are thefts, threats, disputes violent between the producers”.

“While a society has not overcome its problems of institutional weakness, would be difficult to find alternatives in the health field and in the field of Justice”, stated.

For the Mexican Luis González Plascencia, President of the Commission of human rights of the Federal District, the involvement of the military in the fight against drug trafficking “generated a twenty times more difficult situation”.

“We have more than 50,000 dead by decisions that tell us that it should reduce the supply.” “The legalization of drugs is probably not the only answer, but yes it would improve the situation of a lot of problems we have today,” assured.

Touze stressed that conferences such as the one held in the Mexican capital represent an opportunity to generate discussion based “not ideological speeches”, but in the discussion of “proven evidence”.

These forums show that need a larger space so that civil organizations expose their views to Governments, since it is they who are in contact with the problematic areas and know what is there, he added. EFE

The most worrying aspect of the investigation, according to experts, is that the cases of breast cancer are increasing among women aged between 15 and 49 years.

“While high income countries enjoy the benefit of detecting cancer in its early stages of therapies with drugs and vaccines, the problem of breast and cervical cancer is occurring in countries with low incomes in Africa and Asia”, indicates research.

“In these countries, there are more women who develop breast cancer and cervix during its years of reproduction”, adds.

In developing countries this problem can be overcome to cases of death from pregnancy or giving light.

The most significant increase being in the countries of Africa, Middle East, Oceania, Southeast Asia and Central America.

“There is a perception that breast cancer is a disease of females age in developed countries”, however “part of the analysis indicates that it is a big problem for young women in the developing world”, said Christopher Murray, lead author of this study

Currently, for every death caused by cancer of breast or cervical, there are 2.3 deaths due to problems related to motherhood, but experts believe that these cases can equate in 2025. EFE

French researchers hopeful for a malaria vaccine

Paris, 15 sep (EFE).-A team of researchers from the French laboratory of biotechnology Synprosis has confirmed that its vaccine against malaria “MSP3”, currently on trial, “is already one of the two that has proved its effectiveness in endemic areas”.

Responsible for the team and former in the area of malaria of the Pasteur Institute, Pierre Druilhe, explained that the results obtained in recent years guarantee protection from a 64 and 77 percent for children vaccinated prior to 24 months, published today by the French daily “Le Figaro”.

The researchers noted that while good results must be confirmed in studies on a larger scale, the vaccine can “compete” with the current favorite in the field of international research, the so-called “RTS, S” developed by the British Pharmaceutical GlaxoSmithKline.

The full results are published today the “New England Journal of Medicine”, and correspond to the tests since 2007 held in Burkina Faso with a group of 45 children.

Druilhe explained that the vaccine, which is already being tested in a large study in Mali whose results are expected by 2012, is a mechanism of action very different from the of the “RTS, S”, because the last acts in the early stage of infection while the “MSP3” intervenes at the time of its manifestations clinics.

The age of the patients in the sample is that the key age is between 12 and 24 months, the majority of deaths from malaria occur prior to the five years.

The disease, also known as malaria is transmitted by parasites and today threatens to 2 billion people living in endemic areas, particularly in Africa and Asia, as well as ending the lives of 800,000 people every year. EFE
