-From the Neurology unit of USP Marbella insists that nearly 30% of the cases would be avoided if people knew to recognize the “ alerts ”

Marbella, November 2011- last Saturday was held the world stroke day and the figures tell us that the mortality rate in the next six months to a stroke or brain attack nears 35 per cent and a similar proportion are sequels. 30% Of patients suffering an acute stroke survive and can fend for themselves. “ Stroke figures are ugly, but precisely for this reason we must disseminate them. If the population receives information and above all learn to recognize what symptoms tell us of the risk of suffering a stroke, these numbers might change. ”, so has expressed it on Friday the Manius Dr. von Maravic, head of the Neurology unit of USP Marbella

El Dr. Von Maravic has insisted on the importance of recognizing and reacting quickly to an attack transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke, whose symptoms can disappear even in minutes and “ that is not the importance of ”. A TIA can manifest itself, according to precise the USP Marbella Neurology Chief, by the following ítem:

-loss of strength in an arm or a leg

-facial paralysis

-aphasia or inability to temporary to understand the language or communicate correctly

-loss of sensation in a body part

-acute Vertigo with double vision or acute imbalance

-Péloss of vision in one eye for a few minutes ….

“ If there are symptoms, regardless of that disappear in a few minutes or a few hours, the patient has to call an ambulance and go to the emergency room as soon as possible. A specialist must assess him to detect the AIT, establish the causes and start with a preventive program quickly, ” explains the Dr. Von Maravic.

(Not temporary) acute stroke occurs in 85% of cases by the acute blockage of an artery that leaves a part of the brain without irrigation. For treatment, every minute is gold. “ If it does not intervene in the first six hours, neurologist can do is try to improve vital functions of the patient and to establish a programme of rehabilitation, ” points the Dr. Von Maravic, which in 2005 made first Thrombolysis in acute stroke in the province of Malaga.

Risk factors and prevention

For the prevention of stroke, it is necessary to take into account the risk factors. “ The only factor of risk about which we do not have the possibility to intervene is the age (stroke is more frequent in patients over 60 years), but the rest of the risk factors can be controlled ”, adds the neurologist. The main would be as follows:

-hypertension

-heart disease

-tobacco

-sedentary lifestyle

-fat diet

-unhealthy life habits

“ not smoking, drinking alcohol in moderation, follow a healthy diet and exercise not only contribute to the prevention of stroke but that help reduce the risk of many other diseases ”, concludes Dr. Von Maravic.

– under the title of “ Beer: Cheers to your health ”, Symposium has been held last Friday in the framework of the XI Congress of the European Federation of societies of nutrition held these days in Madrid

Madrid, November of 2011- the moderate consumption of beer and its relation to health and nutrition has been analyzed on Friday at the Symposium “ Beer: Cheers to your health! ”, in the framework of the XI Congress of the European Federation of societies of nutrition (FENS) held these days in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos of Madrid. Experts in medicine, nutrition and food have presented the main findings of its investigations, the latest scientific evidence that a possible positive effect of moderate consumption of such a drink on human health would be observed. The relationship of the moderate consumption of beer with cardiovascular health, bone health and obesity, and the presence of antioxidants in human breast milk or the recovery of the metabolism of athlete are the main themes that have been tabled.

Dr. Ramon Estruch as chairman has opened the Symposium with its intervention and outlined the main results of the study “ beer, Mediterranean diet and Cardiovascular disease ”, research that is part of the PREDIMED study that analyzes the effects of the Mediterranean diet in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and is the Coordinator. In his presentation, Dr. Estruch has commented that “ moderate beer drinkers expressed consume a greater quantity of vegetables, legumes, fish, cereals and olive oil, all these products linked to the Mediterranean diet, and ensured greater physical activity ”.

In addition, as explained by Dr. Estruch, another conclusions would be that the overall food pattern of moderate consumers of beer would be closer to the Mediterranean diet than the of non-users of this drink. In addition, has added that “ folic acid, vitamins, iron and calcium intake is higher, and they submitted a lower incidence in diabetes mellitus and hypertension, as well as a lower body mass index and a greater sports ”.

Then Dr. Jonathan j. Powell has focused his presentation on bone health and the potential benefits that she could have the moderate consumption of this beverage fermented. Thus, Prof. Powell, director of studies on Human Nutrition Research, has presented the results of his research on the Silicon content in beer, a mineral that plays an important role in bone health because it favors its density. In addition, has added that “ moderate intake of beer would not only benefit the bone by its Silicon content, whether or not health that the presence of ethanol inhibited bone loss ”.

On the other hand, Dr. Powell has explained that it has recently shown that “ a diet low in Silicon could lead to a reduction of the circumference of the aorta, which is why, the content of this mineral in the beer could also prevent that cardiovascular problems trigger ”.

Beer without alcohol and breast milk

Beer without and breastfeeding have been the protagonists of the intervention of the DRA. Mª Teresa Hernandez Aguilar, pediatrician of the Valencia health agency, which has presented scientific evidence drawn from his study “ effect of beer without alcohol on breast milk ”. One of the conclusions of the investigation, which helped institutions such as the University of Valencia and the Hospital Dr. Peset is that consumption of this beverage would optimize the antioxidant capacity of human milk. The doctor explained that the research has studied 80 nursing mothers, of which half were a usual diet, while a half is them suplementó with two beers without alcohol a day for 30 days.

“ Have determined the antioxidant capacity of breastfeeding at three different times of breastfeeding on the basis of its maturing State (at the beginning or milk calostral, 15 days or milk transacional and the month of the beginning of lactation, when milk is called mature). We have observed a decrease in antioxidant activity as human milk is going to mature, however, mothers nursing mothers that had supplemented their diet with beer without alcohol showed a smaller and more slowly progressive decline ”, explained the DRA. Hernández.

Also, the doctor has completed his speech stressing that mothers who had followed the diet supplemented with beer without alcohol had minor damage to cell oxidation, as well as antioxidant increased, both in the blood and urine.

Beer in the diet of the athlete

Finally, the Symposium has also had the presence of Dr. Manuel Castillo Garzón, Professor of the University of Granada, who outlined the main findings of its inquiry into the role of beer in the metabolism of the athlete recovery.

The study concludes that the moderate consumption of beer can help maintain higher levels of plasma glucose and mitigate stress hormone responses. The maltodextrines, carbohydrates of great interest to the sports nutrition and present in the beer, corrected the possibility of hypoglycemia, that is they metabolize slowly releasing glucose units that pass gradually into the blood and lead to lower and more extended plasma glucose concentrations.

Thus, Prof. Castle has stated that “ is observed that the moderate consumption of this beverage, both in its traditional variety without alcohol, after physical exercise in conditions of high ambient temperature and abundant perspiration, could allow to recover water losses in measures similar to the water ”

immune health and moderate beer consumption

on the other handThere are other studies that relate the consumption of this drink with the capacity of reaction of the body against external agents. The DRA. Ascension Marcos, President of the 11th edition of the Congress of the European Federation of societies of nutrition (FENS) and teacher of research and Director of the Group of Inmunonutrición from the Institute of science and food technology and nutrition (CSIC), is the Director of one of thementitled “ moderate consumption of beer. Nutritional and immunological study in humans and experimental animals ”. The study, conducted in 57 healthy volunteers, has assessed the effect of moderate consumption of this drink on some parameters of the immune system and has concluded that thus consumed by healthy adults, the beer could improve the immune response against the responsible officers of developing infectious diseases. According to the DRA. Marcos, “ noted the increase of leukocytes and increased values of subpopulations of T cells, so moderately consume beer would improve our body’s immune response ”.

On the other hand, the study of the Inmunonutrición group, directed by DRA. Marcos has also banished a false myth, such and as it has itself said doctor since “ changes in weight, neither men nor women have not been observed as result of moderate consumption of beer during the period of experimentation, so that it could be argued that the beer is not responsible for the so-called beer belly ”.

Zaragoza, November 2011- umbilical cord blood transplantation “ has proved in the past 20 years to be able to cure a significant proportion of patients with various diseases, benign and malignantwhich require parents hematopoietic transplantation, but lack of donor HLA-compatible family or not relational ”, points out Dr. Guillermo Sanz, head of section of Hematology clinic of the Hospital Universitario La Fe of Valencia. “ Technique is indicated in leukemias and lymphomas, aplastic anemia, and several congenital diseases, such as serious immunodeficiencies (bubble children), thalassaemia and haemoglobinopathies disorders of metabolism ”, adds.
Compared to other sources of hematopoietic parents, umbilical cord blood has increased availability and requires less HLA compatibility with the receiver. In fact, “ is possible to find a unit appropriate for more than 90% of patients that require ”, explains the expert. This has made the technique to expand significantly. “ En Spain began to perform in children around 1990, and adults starting in 1996 in ”, says. Hospital Universitario La Fe, with more than 250 transplant to his credit, is the most experienced in adults from all over Europe, and its figures are similar for the other two institutions with greater global experience: the University of Minnesota and the University of Tokyo.

“ The progressive increase in the donation of umbilical cord blood will make it possible to offer patients that require it units with greater cell doses and better HLA compatibility, which will result in greater likelihood of healing ”, emphasizes Dr. Sanz. On the other hand, “ improvements in the selection of units and the improvement of techniques such as the former expansion alive of parents hematopoietic or dual transplantation, will make it possible to offer a universal alternative potentially curative for many patients ”. Until few years ago, technique is only performed in high weight adults, but now “ is an alternative source to be considered in any transplant candidate ”.

Spain has been a pioneer worldwide in the creation and development of public cord blood banks. It is the second country in number of stored units, only behind the United States, and the third in units per million inhabitants.
