The physiological and psycho social changes that emerge in adolescence hinder diabetes control.

Physiological and psycho-social changes that emerge in adolescence make it difficult to control diabetes.

as it has become apparent in the 8th seminar practical psychology and Diabetes for parents and adolescents, held last weekend in Vitoria.

-that are shared by the two members of the couple follow-up of diabetes of the son, normalize life with diabetes or share experiences daily with others in the same circumstances, here are some tips to improve coexistence with diabetes in adolescents

-hide transgressions in the control of diabetes, how to eat to eavesdrop, etc. is one of the most important signs that parents must raise search help psicolómagical

-the decline in adherence to treatment, play with the settings of insulin and food, and night-time departures are some of the aspects of the control of diabetes which are most affected during this period

-the debut of the disease, a complication or simply a number of years of evolution of the same are the moments where the need is the psychological support

Vitoria, 2011-December during the child age and, above all in adolescence, one of the aspects of diabetes that needs special attention is psychological. So, the adaptation to the treatment of diabetes and the changes that occur during adolescence makes, sometimes arising doubts and concerns in the family environment. Psychological support to adolescents and their parents contributes to improving coexistence with diabetes at this stage. According to Iñaki Lorente, clinical psychologist of the Navarre Association of Diabetes, “ between 13 and 18 years control of diabetes worsens, as are changes both physiological – in relation to all the hormones are contrarreguladoras-as psycho-social (rebellion) that make it difficult for good control of the disease. It is important that parents understand the position of his son, and vice versa, as well as that they learn to differentiate what aspects of your attitude is due to adolescence and what diabetes so that each is addressed as ”.

With the objective that parents learn to handle potential difficulties and strategies, on the other hand, children meet other young people with your same interests, the Foundation for Diabetes, in collaboration with the diabetic Association of Alava and the Guipuzcoana Diabetes AssociationHe has been held the past weekend in the Palace of congresses Europe (Vitoria) the 8th seminar practical psychology and Diabetes for parents and adolescents. The programme has included theoretical session – practices addressing aspects related to each age group in which the participants are divided.

Fathers and mothers of children with diabetes of 0 to 11 years of age, parents of youth with diabetes aged 12 to 17 years and boys and girls with diabetes from 12 to 17 years have participated in the seminar.

When seeking help psychological

Among the signs before that parents must raise seek psychological help, Iñaki Lorente highlights “ hide transgressions in the control of diabetes, as eating secretly, etc. ”. In this sense, the decline in adherence to treatment, play with the settings of insulin and food, and night-time departures are some of the aspects of the control of diabetes which are most affected during this period. In any case, this expert stresses that “ is always necessary to distinguish which of these problems are due to adolescence and what acceptance of diabetes by adolescent ”.

The debut of the disease, a complication or simply a number of years of evolution of the same are other times where the need is psychological support. “ Approximately 5 years of disease evolution might appear a decrease in motivation ”, indicates. To resolve this situation, this expert recommended to deal with the disease in a positive way, considering the possibility of the existence of a future without diabetes and valuing each of scientific and technological advances that occur for the treatment and “ facilitate control and improve the quality of life ”.

Living with diabetes in adolescents

In addition to these advances, psychologists gathered during the workshop suggest carrying out some steps to living with diabetes as the two members of the couple share the monitoring of child diabetes, avoiding that responsibility rests only on one of them; normalize life with diabetes or share experiences of everyday life with others in the same circumstances.

“ Also – stresses Lorente – is essential to bear in mind that we are moving towards accountability during the stage of adolescence, and for this reason, parents must spend be pilots to co-drivers in the lives of our children ”.

Foundation for Diabetes

The Diabetes Foundation is a charitable non-profit and of general interest which is intended to contribute to the prevention and treatment of diabetes and its complications, as well as to the improvement of the quality of life for people with diabetes. This develops educational, training, research and activities social awareness throughout the territory of the Spanish State.

The creation of multidisciplinary teams would allow early diagnosis of rare diseases.

The creation of multidisciplinary teams would allow early diagnosis of the rare diseases.

round table of the Group of minority diseases of the last Congress national SEMI.

-the experts stress the importance of coordination of different medical specialties to avoid the delay in the diagnosis, is often several years

-Minority, or rare diseases affecting about 3 million Spaniards, are chronic diseases that often cause disability and have a major psychological and social impact for patients and their family environment

Madrid, December 2011.- during the last National Congress of the SEMI (Spanish society of internal medicine) held in Maspalomas (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria)the members of the Group of diseases minority have emphasized the importance of creating multidisciplinary teams in hospitals that are familiar with the global problem of each patient for an early recognition of symptoms of rare diseases. Most of these diseases appear at an early age, while others have their first symptoms in adolescence or adulthood. In addition, most often, these diseases do not affect only a body, but it affected several of them, which entails an enormous difficulty diagnostic and hence the urgent need for coordination between various medical disciplines.

“ Multidisciplinary teams should ideally be trained by the geneticist, neurologist, cardiologist, rehabilitator, physiotherapist, psychologist and social worker. Centres hospital small is difficult to the formation of this team which is why, in these cases, the axis formed by internist and pediatrician is essential ”, underlined Dr. Jorge Francisco Gómez Cerezo, Chief of service of internal medicine of Hospital Infanta Sofía in San Sebastián de los Reyes during his speech at the round table of the Group of diseases minority. This table has also been composed by Dr. Juan of Dios García Díaz, responsible for the unit of clinical genetics and Council genetic of the Hospital Universitario Prince of Asturias in Alcalá de Henares; Dr. Javier Barbatus, Chief of section of medicine internal of the Hospital Universitario La Paz of Madrid; Dr. Jordi Pérez López, Coordinator of the Group and head of the unity of diseases minority within the service of internal medicine of the Hospital Vall d ’ Hebron Barcelona; and DRA. Carmen Dominguez, of the Center for research in Biochemistry and Molecular-nanomedicine biology of rare diseases at the Hospital Vall D ’ Hebron.

For his part, Dr. Juan de Dios Garcia Diaz pointed out that it is important that there should be close collaboration between the internista doctor (in charge of the study of patients with multisystem involvement) and clinical geneticist (as a consultant for character Cross and an expert on genetic Pathology)which both complement each other and share a perspective common. “ clinical geneticist has the added value of their experience and skill in the diagnosis of rare diseases guidance and the ability to perform an appropriate genetic counselling. It should take into account that is a doctor with training and specific dedication to serve patients and families with hereditary diseases, most of them classifiable within the Group of rare diseases. In addition to master well the genetic and molecular mechanisms of these diseases, it has accumulated experience in recognition of their symptoms and physical alterations, which is very important to avoid the delay in diagnosis.

On the other hand, know in depth the usefulness and availability of diagnostic tests for each pathology, as well as the correct interpretation of their results ”, said Dr. García Díaz. Finally, has concluded that “ genetics, in general, contributed decisively to understand the origin of many of these diseases and genetics clinic favors immediate application in the patients of the progress of knowledge and technology ”.

Today advances have enabled that it has generated a big change in terms of treatment and improvement of the quality of life of patients. According to Dr. Javier Barbatus, the most amazing fact has been the passage of the palliative treatment (TSE) enzyme replacement treatment on diseases for deposit in the Lysosomes, Gaucher disease, Fabry, Pompe, Hunter, etc. “ El TSE improves the quality of life, for example those suffering from Gaucherbecause it reduces bone pain and frequency of bone crises, and Fabry, by remission of the most debilitating symptoms prevents ”.

Group of minority diseases of the SEMI

The Group of diseases minority was created with the aim of responding to the emerging health need of minority or rare diseases that today are a health priority, according to Dr. Jordi Pérez López.

As a next step, the Group of diseases minority intends to organize a series of meetings and congresses, such as the day II’s minority diseases and the round table within the XXXIII Congress of internal medicine; In addition to convene one scholarship to promote research and establish a Spanish registration of minority diseases in internal medicine (REMIN). The main objective of this group is to promote knowledge, research, records and guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment for this type of pathology.

Minority or rare diseases are defined as those low-prevalence diseases because they tend to affect 1 in every 2,000 people, although as a whole affect about 3 million people in Spain. Furthermore, are chronic diseases with frequent psychological and social impact, on some occasionsthey can produce disability.

Improved early detection of breast cancer.

Improvement in the early detection of cancer breast.

a study at the Polytechnic University of Madrid achieved a significant improvement in the classification of breast cancer data

Spain, 2011-December Researchers of the Automation Group in signal and communications from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (CSAG/UPM) implemented a new learning method for artificial neural networks based on the synaptic metaplasticidad of biological neurons, which has allowed to classify patterns database Wisconsin (WBCD) breast cancer, international reference in mammography, with an accuracy of the 99.63%.

Cancer is one of the main causes of mortality worldwide and research into the diagnosis and treatment has become a topic of vital importance to the scientific community.

Prevention remains a challenge, and the best way to increase the survival of the patients is through early detection. If cancer cells are detected before its spread to other organs, the survival rate is higher than 97%.

For this reason, the use and development of automated classifiers to give support to medical diagnosis has risen markedly in recent times. These classification systems attempt to minimize errors produced by specialists, increase the number of diagnostics that can perform in a given time, and its success rate. Most of these systems are based on techniques of artificial intelligence combined with signal processing, mainly: artificial neural networks, wavelet analysis, image analysis using models Bayesian, machines vector support, fuzzy logic and fractal models among other powerful mathematical techniques.

is specifically an artificial neural network (AMMLP), trained with a new method (Metaplasticidad Artificial) proposed by Professor Diego Andina and applied to data from cancer by the researcher Alexis Marcano-Cedeño, both belonging to the Group on automation in signal and communications of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (CSAG/UPM)which has achieved the best results so far.

Metaplasticidad

The concept of biological Metaplasticidad was defined in 1996 by W.C. Abraham The prefix “ goal ” comes from the Greek “ beyond ” or “ above ” while the word “ plasticity ” relates to the ability to have neurons change the value of the strength of synaptic joints. Abraham defined the metaplasticidad as the induction of synaptic changes in function of the previous synaptic activity, i.e. the metaplasticidad depends on much of the history of activation of the synapses, and hypothesized that the metaplasticidad plays an important role in stability (homeostasis)learning efficiency and mechanism of biological memory.

this database is one of the best known and used for testing algorithms of classification of patterns of breast cancer. The WBCD consists of 699 samples. Each record in the database has nine attributes. Integer from 1 to 10 values are assigned to the assessments, 1 being the closest benign and 10 closest to evil. Each sample is also associated with a tag of class, which can be “ benign ” or “ evil ”. This data set contains 16 entries with attribute values missing in this study were excluded from the analysis. The database contains 444 (65.0%) benign samples and 239 (35.0%) samples malignas.

comparison and discussion

results obtained in this study were compared with other results, specifically with the current algorithms of greater success, on the basis of data of Wisconsin.

The AMMLP obtained an accuracy in the classification of 99,63% in the best simulation and 99,58% average, improving the results of the rest of classifiers. In addition the AMMLP, in comparison with other algorithms, exhibits a low computational cost and is easy to implement. The success of the system proposed by the researchers of the UPM reinforces some of the hypotheses of Abraham, and establishes new ones, which could lead to important consequences not only in medicine but in psychology and cybernetics.
