Denounce the poaching of some 450 elephants in Cameroon

Geneva, 28 feb ( EFE).-close to 450 elephants were killed recently by hunters poaching in the National Park Bouba Ndjida, in the North of Cameroon, reported today the body responsible for the Convention on international trade in endangered species of Fauna and Flora Savage (CITES). This mass slaughter of pachyderms is not an isolated event and is part of “a trend that has been detected recently in several countries, where hunters equipped with sophisticated weaponry decimate the population of elephants”, according to the director-general of the CITES, John Scalon. Elephants are coveted by the ivory of their tusks, which is changed not only money, but also by “weapons and ammunition intended for conflicts in neighbouring countries,” said the head of the Agency, under the UN. Although the increase of the capture of elephants has been dramatic in Cameroon, the other 38 African States that have populations of these animals are also concerned. “It has been reported that the elephants have been massacred by groups from Chad and Sudan in recent weeks, taking advantage of the dry season”, according to the information gathered by the CITES, which is headquartered in Geneva. The Secretariat of the CITES indicated that it is in contact with the Ministry of forests and wild life of Cameroon, Chad, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan to offer cooperation and helping...

Weak babies: consequences of wars and armed conflicts

. economists Hani Mansour and Daniel Rees from the University of Colorado Denver ( United States), found in new research that this association between prenatal exposure to violence and low weight may be due to stress. “Psychological stress is an explanation for this relationship, although we cannot exclude malnutrition”, they claim. Según Mansour and Rees, was already known by previous research that earthquakes and terrorist attacks are associated with a lower weight at birth, so they are doomed to investigate whether the same applies to armed violence. Mansour and Rees discussed 1,224 births of women living in the West Bank during the second Intifada. This armed uprising began in September 2000 and caused the death of more than 4,000 Palestinians. To analyze how much violence were exposed pregnant specialists calculated how many Palestinians were killed in the area where they lived. And proved how much violence there to his eldest was around the risk of babies born with low birth weight. “We found that every additional death related to the armed conflict that occurred six to nine months before birth is associated with an increase in the possibility of having a baby of low birth weight,” says Mansour. Mansour and Rees controlled the presence of anemia and other factors related to nutrition, but found that most likely is that the stress of the mother is the cause behind the...

Some public health researchers had hoped that active video games could be an alternative for the games and sports in the open air, at least for some physical activity children need, especially for those living in troubled neighborhoods where playing in the street is not always an option. “Had hoped that play video games might induce a substantial increase in physical activity of children,” said Tom Baranowski and colleagues at Baylor. “Frankly, we were awed by the total lack of difference”. For the study, they distributed consoles Wii 78 children who did not have. Half was given the option of choosing an active play, such as Wii Sports or Dance Dance Revolution-Hottest Party 3, and the other half the option of choosing a game inactive, such as Disney Sing It Pop Hits and Super Mario Galaxy.
