Brussels (Reuters) – the European Parliament endorsed on Wednesday to a devout Catholic as new Commissioner of health of the European Union, ignoring those who fear that the Maltese politician could back legislation on stem cell research, abortion or gay rights<\/p>\n
the Greens, Liberals and Socialists in the European Parliament had announced that they would vote against Tonio Borg, a former Foreign Minister and justice in Malta, saying that their beliefs could influence the policies of the EU.<\/p>\n
as Commissioner Borg will have access to the field of medical care and contraceptives, as well as control of transmitted diseases sexually.<\/p>\n
Borg, who was in Malta the day of the vote according to a person in charge of the Commission, told MEPs before the consultation that their personal points of view they would not affect her work as Commissioner of health.<\/p>\n
