Madrid, September 2011.- El Hospital Universitario Prince of AsturiasAlcala de Henares, has completed the comprehensive reform of its emergency service with the completion of the second phase of works, which will come into operation on 3 October. Works have consisted in comprehensive actions in the areas of Radiology, halls of consultation services orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, urology and General Surgery, psychiatry, as well as areas of boxes for the areas of medical, surgical, observation and outpatient treatmentsthey occupy an area of 2,420 square meters.

This second stage work began in November of last year once concluded the first, which consisted of the construction of the new building, the area of Pediatrics, and the area of adult as well as admission service and access for ambulances.

Care to patients whose clinical situation requires attention in bed is carried out in specific care spaces distributed in 22 beds for medical area, 19 beds to the observation area (4 of them for patients requiring isolation by its Pathology)9 beds in the surgical area and 11 chairs for outpatient treatments.

Boxes are equipped with monitoring of vital signs. In the case of clinical situation more critical patients, this is controlled through a central monitoring, located at the controls of nursing, enabling clinical surveillance in remote.

Greater provision of beds and consultations

The emergency service incorporates for the first time a specific area of beds for the care of the psychiatric pathology. Including this new assistance, boxes of the emergency service of the hospital staffing has become, thanks to comprehensive reform, 45 to 55 boxes, which is an improvement in the comfort of assistance to patients and their families and the daily work of professionals. In addition, the outpatient area has increased in two chairs. The new query area has also improved its Endowment, from 4 to 7 queries for the medical and surgical, specialities in addition to two rooms of priests and a room of gypsum. The diagnostic imaging area has two rooms, x-rays and an ultrasonically.

The comprehensive reform of the emergency service, conducted in two phases, has allowed to increase the area of 2,416 square meters to 4.883. The regional government has allocated around EUR 7 million for this reform, which is part of the reform programme of hospitals has a budget of EUR 200 million.

Intelligent standby system

Patients who enter emergency receive a ticket information and an ID bracelet that functions as a locator, enabling health professionals know the location of the patient at all times. Thanks to a few computer terminals located in waiting rooms, families can learn the patient is in what area of urgency.

The emergency service has a system, pioneer in the network of public hospitals in the community of Madrid, which uses the fingerprint of the professional to access the story medical electronics, clinical reports from automatically being registered.

New educational portal will improve control of antibiotics in Colombia

new educational portal will improve control of antibiotics in Colombia

-Apex is a service created by Pfizer and the Colombian Association of the infectious diseases to prevent deaths caused by resistance to the drugs.

-The launch of the initiative, from 26 to 30 September, will feature the presence of international experts in resistance microbial.

-more than 700 Colombian specialists will receive training on the administration of drugs in Barranquilla, Pereira, Medellín and Bogotá.

-at least half of the prescription of antibiotics in Colombia could be wrong.

Bogotá, September of 2011. The Apex web platform, to be launched in Colombia from 26 to 30 September, will manage the use of antibiotics in hospital institutions in the country and combat the growing bacterial resistance to these drugs.

For the presentation of the site on the Internet, international experts will visit the country and trained more than 700 Colombian experts about the proper administration of drugs.

The Conference will be held in Barranquilla, Pereira, Medellín and Bogotá.

Directed infectólogos, internists, ICU physicians and heads of committees of infections, the portal is a joint effort between Pfizer and the Colombian Association of infectology (ACIN) and will be divided into two parts: educational and registration.

The first will provide information on the types of available antibiotics, concentrations and presentations recommended for each disease, and the correct way of prescribing them. The second will be comprised of a data bank, where each health centre will take control of the drugs used, doses prescribed presentations and patients receiving treatment.

The pulmonologist for intensivist Abraham Ali, “ Apex will be a very useful tool for hospitals “, because it will help to reduce the resistance to antibiotics, a phenomenon that produces the microbes do not yield to traditionally effective treatments to combat them.

Ali explains that resistance to antibiotics is produced by poor or excessive formulation of these medicines. This could be, he says the intensivist, lack of knowledge about how it should be used.

According to the World Health Organization (who), the situation causes it to be more difficult to control infections and puts patients at risk of dying by previously treatable diseases. For example, according to figures from the Agency, each year appear 440,000 new cases of MDR-TB that cause at least 150,000 deaths.

In Colombia, while there is not a national registry of resistant microorganisms, in a study published in 2008 by the Bogotá District secretariat of health, it is revealed that “ between 25% and 40% of all hospitalized patients receiving antibiotics, of which 50% of prescriptions can be wrong ”.

For Ali “ the situation is of concern worldwide because it has caused that we do not have how to deal with some bacteria ”. It ensures that occasionally arise germs for which there is no treatment options; so doctors must rely on very old antibiotics, which were no longer used because they were unsafe or produced many side effects.

A service such as Apex, which will guide the specialists on the use of drugs and promote diversification of antibiotics, will help to reduce resistance and save thousands of lives each year. Although initially only be available in Colombia, its creators aim to bring this educational program to other countries in the Andean region.

Dates of launch conferences:

· Barranquilla. Monday, September 26 at the Dann Carlton hotel. For 100 physicians

· Pereira. Tuesday, September 27, hotel Pereira. For 100 physicians

· Medellín. Wednesday, September 28, hotel Intercontinental. For 200 physicians

The Prince of Asturias Hospital improves the process of sterilization of the instruments

el Hospital Príncipe de Asturias improves the process of sterilization of instruments

TRAS LA reform makes A year of CENTRAL STERILIZATION

Madrid, 2011-September the use of techniques of asepsis and antisepsis is essential in the health sector. The reform of the Central of sterilization of the Hospital Universitario Prince of Asturias, in Alcalá de Henares, includes strategies that improve patient safety. All the material is previously cleaned through a wash of drag, with lower possible manipulation, for subsequent manual or mechanical cleaning and drying, according to the instruments to be processed.

The Central of sterilization of the University Hospital, Prince of Asturias – with an area of 510 m2 – has processed since its reform in February 2010 a total of 113.079 boxes of instruments for surgical block, consultations, hospitalization and textiles.

In the area of laundering dirty material from the surgical block (which has direct connection to reduce the journey that performs material from the operating room) is harvested and processed dirty instrumentation units and hospital services. This area has a wash tunnel, a washing machine termodesinfectadora machine guns of compressed air and water pressure, ultrasonic, two batteries of different sizes for drag and manual washing washing and trays of different sizes to prepare material for washing and disinfection, among other teams.

Preparation of materials according to their level of asepsis

In the area of preparation is revised, prepare and/or packaged units and services and surgical material. It has four esterilizadores-autoclaves of steam (two of 676 litres and two 250 liters), two selladoras-fechadoras for packing or packaging loose instrumentation and the apparatus necessary for process instrumentation, including that used for the quality and safety controls.

Steam autoclave destroys all forms of microbial, including spores, and is a method of effective sterilization, safe, quick and economic. At 134 ° C sterilised surgical instruments of heat-resistant stainless steel and textile materials. For other types of instruments (laparoscopias, accessories of respirators of UCI and anesthesia, bandages, cables, engines …) used cycles with temperatures of 132 ° C or 121 ° C. Not all materials have the same tolerance to sterilisation, some deteriorate with steam at high temperatures and require a special thermal process.

In the technical area prepare teams of different techniques (surgical, Parthian, UCI …) and other textile materials (towels, bathrobes, sheets …) for their sterilization account with a selladora-fechadora for packaging material. The sterile material area has conditions of temperature and humidity to ensure that you download and place the material coming out of the autoclave by specialties. The Central of sterilization communicates directly with the surgical block, from which comes most of the material to sterilize, through two circuits, one for dirty instruments and one for the clean.

In the area of ethylene oxide sterilizers it sterilised in an autoclave at low temperature (54 ° C). This gas is very effective to sterilize materials termosensibles that do not support steam sterilization; due to its characteristics, the sterilizers are located in a room with special installation isolated security, independent ventilation, warning alarms controlled in remote and detectors of environmental gas levels.

Quality control

The area of Control oversees the production of the central hospital and the Integral Center for the diagnosis and treatment Francisco Díaz (CIDIT), the Centre of Alcalá de Henares, dependent on hospital specialties. The CDIT has operating rooms that require sterile material and from the central controls the external process of installed there. In any process of sterilization, it is essential to carry out checks to ensure proper sterilization, in other words, the destruction of all microorganisms. Check them before their storage and/or distribution.

Numbers and letters: the complex functions of the brain

numbers and letters: the complex functions of the brain

-The second day of the 17TH Congress of the European society for cognitive psychology, celebrated in San Sebastián, will focus today, Friday, in the research on bilingualism, the ability to learn new languages or our ability to remember numbers.

– involving top international scientistsexperts in psycholinguistics – as Manuel Carreiras, Itziar Laka, Nuria Sebastián, or Randi Martin – and mathematical processing, such as Denes Szucs.

Donostia, 2011-September why children are easier to learn new languages? being bilingual facilitates proficiency in more languages? Learn how a new spelling? Why mathematics is them choke to some people? Questions such as these will be part of the Agora in the second day of the 17TH Congress of the society European of the cognitive psychology, ESCoP 2011, which continues today, Friday, their activities in the Palacio Kursaal of Donostia.

The complexity of the language will be one of the main themes of this day care. This area will be dedicated three symposia, three oral sessions and 41 presentations of poster, with particular emphasis on aspects such as multilingualism (with greater focus if possible given that the Congress is held in a bilingual territory), the visual recognition of words or the interiorisation of new grammars.

Manuel Carreiras, an authority in matter and director of the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language (BCBL), the organizing body of the Congress, participate directly in the debate. In addition, Congress counts on the participation of Itziar Laka, of the University of the Basque country, and Nuria Sebastián, Universidad Pompeu Fabra, two scientific international reference in the field of bilingualism.

The various presentations related to this subject include, for example, an exhibition about the differences between monolingual and bilingual in the brain process of grammatical and semantic understanding, or an explanation of the advantage of the bilingual in cognitive control. Precisely, bilingualism is one of the main lines of research of the BCBL, which focuses, inter alia, on the cognitive consequences of multilingualism.

In addition, one of the Summit of the day will arrive with Randi Martin, of the Rice Universersidad of us intervention. Martin taught a master class entitled “ memory work and language processing: an updated view of multicomponent ”, that will focus on how the understanding of the language depends on the ability to maintain and manipulate information in working memory.

But it will not only speak of language. Researcher Denes Szucs, a cognitive neuroscientist focusing on research of the representation of mathematics in the brain and the detection and resolution of conflicts, will participate in a morning Symposium on processing of numbers. It is also an expert in some dysfunctions related to mathematics, such as dyscalculia, a disability which limits the skills in this area. Elena Salillas, the BCBL, also explain the implementation underway for his studies on dyscalculia in relation to bilingualism, which will begin in a few weeks in Donostia.

During the day, in addition to the above issues, will be human learning, consciousness, memory, emotions, attention, and facial recognition, highlighting the involvement of the brain and the human mind in these cognitive skills.

1000 scientists and 700 presentations

In this way will continue the ESCoP 2011 Congress, with the sponsorship of the Basque Government, the provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, the Ministry of science and innovation and the Spanish society of Experimental Psychology (SEPEX) and the European society for cognitive psychology (ESCoP). The event brings together these days in the Guipuzcoan capital almost a thousand scientists and personalities investigated around the brain. The study of this body key to get to know the human being is made from many different disciplines, so at the Kursaal will meet psychologists, pedagogues, linguists, physicists, mathematicians, computer, physicians or biologists. Very different professional profiles with a common goal: understanding the human brain.

The Congress, which will be witness to the Sunday in 700 scientific presentations, boasts the most outstanding personalities from the world of cognitive psychology, with the participation of, among others, Robert Zatorre of the McGill University of Canada; Dana Small, Yale University, USA; Cathy Price, of the University Colllege of London; Randi Martin, of the Rice University (USA); Antonino Vallesi, of the International School for Advanced Studies (Italy); Itziar Laka, the University of the Basque country; Nuria Sebastián, President of the ESCoP from Universitat Pompeu Fabra or Manuel Carreiras, director of the BCBL.

The organizer of the event, the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language (BCBL) is an International Centre for interdisciplinary research for the study of cognition, brain and language promoted by the Basque Government to promote science and research in the Basque country. The Centre, which is counted among the BERC (Basque Excellence Research Center), has among its partners Ikerbasque, Innobasque, the provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and the University of the Basque country.
