French researchers hopeful for a malaria vaccine

Paris, 15 sep (EFE).-A team of researchers from the French laboratory of biotechnology Synprosis has confirmed that its vaccine against malaria “MSP3”, currently on trial, “is already one of the two that has proved its effectiveness in endemic areas”.

Responsible for the team and former in the area of malaria of the Pasteur Institute, Pierre Druilhe, explained that the results obtained in recent years guarantee protection from a 64 and 77 percent for children vaccinated prior to 24 months, published today by the French daily “Le Figaro”.

The researchers noted that while good results must be confirmed in studies on a larger scale, the vaccine can “compete” with the current favorite in the field of international research, the so-called “RTS, S” developed by the British Pharmaceutical GlaxoSmithKline.

The full results are published today the “New England Journal of Medicine”, and correspond to the tests since 2007 held in Burkina Faso with a group of 45 children.

Druilhe explained that the vaccine, which is already being tested in a large study in Mali whose results are expected by 2012, is a mechanism of action very different from the of the “RTS, S”, because the last acts in the early stage of infection while the “MSP3” intervenes at the time of its manifestations clinics.

The age of the patients in the sample is that the key age is between 12 and 24 months, the majority of deaths from malaria occur prior to the five years.

The disease, also known as malaria is transmitted by parasites and today threatens to 2 billion people living in endemic areas, particularly in Africa and Asia, as well as ending the lives of 800,000 people every year. EFE

EU withdraw the prohibition to the legumes Egyptian but not outbreaks

Brussels, 15 sep (EFE).-the European Union (EU) said today that it will lift the ban imposed on the leguminous vegetables from Egypt because of the crisis of the outbreak of the bacteria e. coli occurred in Germany and France in June, but not which weighs on the outbreaks sprouts.

The EU-27 today accepted the proposal of the European Commission (EC) to allow import from Egypt of leguminous fresh or frozen, such as green beans or peas, soon, Brussels said in a statement

On the other hand, he pointed out that there will be no changes with regard to the temporary ban on the outbreaks of these vegetables.

Imports of this type of Egyptian vegetables, as well as some kinds of seeds, are prohibited in the EU from the beginning of July after the European competent authorities establish a link between seeds of fenugreek or fenugreek (“Trigonella foenum-graecum”) from that country and the outbreak of e. coli, which left half a hundred dead.

The Commission decided to propose today, at a meeting of the Committee on the food – chain consisting of experts from the Member States and the EC – the withdrawal of the Egyptian from the list of products fresh legumes prohibited.

The measure, backed by the Member States, also introduces some clarifications on the measures that affect the seeds of mustard, said the Commission.

Decisions on imports of the above-mentioned Egyptian products shall remain in force until 31 of October, moment in which will be reviewed, he concluded. EFE

UN: Chad is facing a humanitarian crisis of tragic proportions

Geneva 15 sep (EFE).-Chad is facing a humanitarian crisis “of dramatic proportions” by growing food insecurity caused by low rainfall, the cholera epidemic and the mass of thousands of migrants from Libya. return

This was stated today at a press conference in Geneva the humanitarian coordinator of the UN in Chad, Thomas Gurtner, who emphasized, however, the progress made on security in the past two years and the willingness of the authorities of the country to attend the population more needed.

The area most affected by food insecurity in the region of the Sahel, where nearly 1.5 million people are malnourished and severe acute child malnutrition rate reached 20%.

Gurtner said it is expected that these encrypted to increase in the coming months due to low rainfall despite the onset of the rainy season, which will mean a decline in agricultural production and an increase in the prices of food

In addition, the return of emigrants from Libya implies pressure much higher in the region of the Sahel, since over half of the 80,000 people who have returned to Chad during the Libyan conflict came from this area.

Gurtner clarified that the food crisis does not reach the levels of the Horn of Africa because several of the UN agencies have 18 months working in the country, where they have created 200 supplementary feeding centres and have managed to maintain the levels of malnutrition.

“However, are still not in a position to reduce them, only to contain them, which is why we consider it important that humanitarian aid does not cease until at least 2012 so that the situation does not reach the dramatic levels of the Horn of Africa”, pointed out.

Another problem of Chad, located among the five poorest in the world, is the cholera epidemic unprecedented who lives at the moment, with a few affected and 400 13,500 dead, and scarce response capacity by the lack of medical infrastructure limited workforce and poor infrastructures for water and sanitation in the country.

“There has been a cholera epidemic such since 1991, which resulted in 14,000 affected, almost the same as now, with the difference that it is expected that the number of patients exceeds the 15,000 to advance of the rainy season”, explained Gurtner.

Also there is cholera outbreaks in neighbouring countries such as Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria.

Humanitarian coordinator of the UN in Chad stressed that the group most vulnerable to these problems are nearly 180,000 internally displaced persons in the country, as a result of the internal conflict between 2007 and 2009.

In addition to internally displaced persons in Chad live some 250,000 refugees from Darfur and 130,000 from the Central African Republic, which, however, live in camps a little better equipped with water and sanitation services to live in which the displaced persons.

To assist these vulnerable populations, FAO made a November of last year an emergency appeal to donors of $ 50 million, of which, he said Gurtner, not been raised in all this time “not a penny”.

“It is essential that the international community is aware of the humanitarian crisis of tragic proportions that live Chad in a few months if we do not act now,” stressed. EFE

(www.neomundo.com.ar) to improve the sexual lives of women could be simply a matter of faith. Placebo without any concrete effect is enough women to improve various symptoms related to sexual dissatisfaction, as the little desire to make love.

To those conclusions came a study conducted by the University of Texas-Austin (United States) published in the medical journal Journal of Sexual Medicine. For authors, research suggests that taking a simple measure or feel more hope about their sexuality has reached to improve women’s satisfaction.

LA dysfunction SEXUAL

sexual dysfunctions occur when a person fails to enjoy the sexual act in their stages. This problem can develop at any stage of life and may have a psychological, physical or joint origin

Cindy Meston, one of the authors clarified that measure sexual satisfaction is very difficult as it relies on each woman’s own perceptions. In this regard, Andrea Bradford, another researcher, said that the “sexual dysfunction is, somehow, what a woman says that it is.” “If it perceives that they have a low sexual desire or difficulties to achieve an orgasm, then that is what is taken into account”.

Hope and pleasure

as part of its investigation the authors worked with 50 women who were in stable, committed relationships. Many of them were even married. All the volunteers took a placebo for three months and completed a questionnaire on symptoms of sexual dissatisfaction.

Meston stressed that one-third of women who participated in the study experienced marked improvements in their sexual life, especially an increase in the desire and libido.

The author said that a decrease in sexual desire is normal in the ladies in long relationships. He explained that the volunteers who improved their symptoms probably felt hopes to improve his sex life or the increase in the sexual encounters with his partners enhanced the intimacy between the two.
