Colombia, a leader in the study of infections caused by fungi.

-the inauguration of the Centre for research and diagnosis for the fungal infections (Cidmic), in Medellín, becomes Colombia in the Andean region

– the Center will have equipment for molecular studies, will develop guidelines for the management of fungal infection and will provide education to health professionals

-more than half of the cases of Mycosis invasive are deadly

Colombia, 2011-August the inauguration of the Centre for research and diagnosis for the fungal infections (Cidmic), which was held on Monday July 18 in Medellín during the celebration of the X Congress of infectious diseases, will be to Colombia most advanced country in the Andean region and one of the leaders of Latin America in the study of infections caused by the so-called ‘ opportunistic fungi ’.

Thanks to its modern technology, which includes equipment for molecular analysis, the Cidmic will be a focal point for Colombia health professionals to achieve more rapid and effective of the invasive Mycosis diagnoses or systemic, conditions which, due to their aggressiveness and uncertain origin, causing death in approximately half of people who become infected. The new Centre will also develop guidelines for the management of these diseases and provide education to health professionals.

The Cidmic is the result of an agreement between the Colombian Association of infectology (Acin), the Corporation for biological research (CIB) and the Pfizer laboratories, whose work as a whole from 2010 sparked interest in the study of fungi in the country.

Under the direction of the doctors Beatriz Lucía Gómez and María Ángela Tobón and counseling general of the Dr Angela Restrepo, the Centre will work at the headquarters of the CIB in Medellín (career 72A No. 78B-141).

“ Fungal infectious diseases are of difficult diagnosis, what makes them a real threat for who suffers from – says the Restrepo Dr. –. The Cidmic aims to improve the diagnosis of these diseases through the use of refined methods of laboratory, in experienced hands and in conjunction with a specialist clinical advice will be able to make the difference between the death or the recovery of the patient at risk ”.

What are the Mycosis?

The fungal infections are infections caused by fungi. There are superficial fungal infections, such as those that occur in the skin or nails – usually treatable with topical medications –, and other invasive or systemic, they reach the bloodstream or internal organs and which can be deadly in severely ill patients or whose immune system is weakened. Generally, the problem is compounded by the difficult diagnosis and treatment late.
The invasive fungal infection or systemic more frequent are candidiasis, aspergillosis, histoplasmosis and fusariosis, cryptococcosis. Treatment is based on the Administration, through oral or intravenous, antifungals for systemic use.

Global data indicate that about one in ten patients who are performed blood – cultivation for the detection of pathogenic micro-organisms in the blood – are some kind of infection by fungi. The most common causative agents correspond to yeast of the genus Candida, causing various diseases globally designated systemic candidiasis.

Despite the importance of these fungal infections, specific data on the incidence and prevalence in Colombia are limited. Precisely for this reason, the Cidmic will be a centre where they will get and recolectarán data allowing to expand the knowledge and, in particular, make more accurate diagnoses and provide more effective treatments.

As the doctor Luis Angel Villar, President of the Colombian Association of infectology (Acin), “ the creation of this Center is an opportunity for patients and for the groups of health, they will have appropriate potentially fatal disease diagnosis, but proper treatment can save lives ”.

There is a very low perception of risk of AIDS infection among young people and among drug users.

There is a very low perception of risk of AIDS infection among young people and consumers of drugs.

a study by the Institute for research in primary care (IDIAP Jordi Gol) analyzes what is the perception of risk of AIDS infection among the users of non-governmental organizations working in programmes of prevention and control of HIV-AIDS in Catalonia.

-En Cataluña, there are currently 12,000 AIDS patients

-information on the prevention and the risk of AIDS infection increases the knowledge but is insufficient alone to achieve behavioural changes

-groups that show lower perception of risk of infection with AIDS are injecting drug users, young people and adolescents

Spain, 2011-August project “Perception of risk of infection by HIV AIDS for users of non-governmental organizations working in the prevención-control of HIV AIDS in Catalonia”, is a qualitative study, which interviewed users (employees / ACE of commercial sex, men who have sex with other men)(, young and adolescent drug users and people with HIV) of 36 organizations non governmental (NGOs) working in the prevention and control of AIDS in Catalonia.

Results

-Mostly afraid to diagnosis and that is why many people are undiagnosed.

-workers / commercial sex as are daily that they have to defend their right to health and prevention. Many clients ask for services without condoms in exchange for more

-the same drug users point out that the perception of risk of infection among this population is low, and it seems that there is still a widespread practice of sharing needles and syringe

– among young people is understood sex not protected as a facilitator of greater rapprochement and intimacy with your partner

-also perceived risk on the basis of the appearance of the person, if it appears to be healthy or sick, so that you have unprotected sex with many people “apparently healthy”.

-young people think that maintaining relationships sexual esporàdines not be contagious

-young people used more condoms as a preventive measure before a pregnancy to protect other transmitted diseases sexually.

Anna Berenguera main research project considers that “needs to be changes in behaviour, therefore, in the future should improve the socio-ecological approach to the perception of the risk of infection with AIDS.” It is important that deemed the aspect that influence healthy habits of individuals, both the individual and social, and cultural ”.

The beneficiaries will receive additional funds to continue with phase II of their research in a period of two years.

“To find solutions to the global persistent health problems is a long, complex and expensive process.” “CGE is designed to help innovators in the world, providing the necessary resources to explore bold ideas that often are too risky for attracting funds through other mechanisms,” said Chris Wilson, director of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation global health discovery.

“We are excited to allow developments continued in the new approaches that serve to prevent or reduce the burden of the diseases that kill or eliminate millions of vulnerable people in the world”.

CGE is a mechanism for granting by parties which allows the feasibility of innovative ideas to try and to provide additional resources for these projects which have proved to be promising in regard to addressing global health problems as a priority when there are still no solutions. The beneficiaries have shown their gratitude from all over the world, and projects in this round looking for new technologies of bold prevention and treatment to combat malaria, HIV and pneumonia.

Examples of projects that receive funds from phase II:

-Teun Bousema from Radboud University in the Netherlands, which is intended to interrupt transmission of malaria to deploy interventions targeting the conflicting issues of transmission;

-Carmenza Spadafora of the IASI in Panama and Jose Stoute from Pennsylvania State University, investigating if malaria can be treated by microwave irradiation;

-Fredros Okumu the Ifakara Health Institute, which aims to use vector of foreign control instruments to control malaria (founded jointly by Grand Challenges Canada and by the Gates Foundation).

Beneficiaries who receive funds for phase II will receive up to a million dollars in additional funds over a period of two years. applications for the next open round, round 8, will begin to accept since the beginning of September.
