Energy metabolism, new therapeutic target in the fight against breast cancer.

according to the research project “ the pathogenesis of breast cancer Neo-síntesis ”, funded by Ausonia and presented by the Dr. Javier Menendez of the Institute Catalan of Oncology of Girona.

-the results of the project have been presented at VII Symposium of advances and results in research Oncology in Seville

-this approach would open the door to the validation of anti-metabólicos drugs, which would be effective in the treatment of tumors that present a high number of CSCs and are very aggressive

-work also demonstrates, for the first time at the molecular level, reduce calories, a healthy diet and exercise are the most effective measures to prevent the breast cancer in high-risk women

– is the only research in Spain and one of the few worldwide who works in metabolism and cancer

– financing of this study fits in the solidarity campaign driven by Arbora & Ausonia Ausonia of support to the Spanish Association against cancer (aecc) to promote the investigation and prevention of breast cancer

Tuesday, April of 2012.- the Oncology of Girona-Catalan Institute researchers have discovered a new therapeutic target to prevent the breast cancer in women at high risk of This disease. The results of research funded by Ausonia (Arbora & Ausonia) in the context of its collaboration with the Spanish Association against cancer (aecc) since 2008, show that a correct energy metabolism could be eliminated effectively the primary cells of tumors or cancer stem cells.

The research project, led by Dr. Javier Menendez, with the name “ Neo-síntesis of fatty acids in the pathogenesis of breast cancer ”, was tabled last Tuesday in Seville at VII Symposium of advances and results in research Oncologywhich was held in the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBIS). This study is the only Spain who works in metabolism and cancer, and one of the few internationally.

These results provide evidence pre clinic needed to start clinical trials that would open a new route for drug development anti-metabólicos in the treatment of biologically aggressive breast cancers enriched in cancer stem cells, which are mostly insensitive to conventional radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments and true responsible for relapse of the disease of the emergence of metastases in other tissues.

These drugs inhibirían the proliferation of breast cancer stem cells, two molecular processes that can not be blocked with the classic treatments of hormones, radiotherapy or chemotherapy. “ Our study provides the pre-clinical evidence needed to start clinical trials in order to validate the effectiveness of these drugs in the treatment of breast cancers with a high number of cancer stem cells ”, explains Dr. Menéndez.

In addition, research highlights, also for the first time and on the basis of a molecular explanation, the importance of a healthy diet, i.e., “ not overeating and eating well ” and physical exercise as effective measures on the prevention of the breast cancer in high-risk women.

Ausonia and aecc, together fight against breast cancer by

The research project is part of the solidarity campaign that Ausonia supports the aecc for four years, in its work to promote and finance research in breast cancer, and impart tips and useful information for the prevention of disease.

Currently, the brand of feminine hygiene of Arbora & Ausonia, is funded a second research project on metastasis in breast cancer. The work, led by the Dr. Samuel Seoane of the University of Santiago de Compostela, examines the relationship between the presence of a dominant protein in a gland of the brain (Pit-1 protein) and the emergence of metastases.

Ausonia collaborates with the aecc is part of the commitment of the mark with women’s health. Therefore, and since years ago, Ausonia collaborates in different initiatives, together with the Spanish society of Gynecology and obstetrics, as the project “ your care unites us ”, that they consolidate and generate scientific knowledge, and favouring an integral care to women.

Research, key

Breast cancer is one of the most important in our society health problems to be the type of most common cancer in women: one in eight women will develop this disease throughout his life.

Survival after breast cancer has improved dramatically in the past 20 years, thanks to the efforts made in research. Every year we have more information and better tools to prevent and treat breast cancer, which has allowed that 78% of women suffering from a Spain breast cancer survive more than 5 years. That is why research in breast cancer is key to achieve effective treatments to improve and increase the life expectancy of women that their life will suffer from this disease.
