within the framework of the 17th National meeting of the Spanish society of hypertension – Spanish League for the fight against Arterial hypertension (SEH – LELHA)

-one of the objectives of its establishment is the advance in scientific knowledge of the mechanisms etiopathogenic hypertensive brain injury, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines in primary and secondary prevention of this disease take

-the study group on hypertension and brain (GEHYC) will collaborate with scientific societies and other labour groups interested in the relationship between hypertension and cerebral impact

-hypertension blood is the most closely related to cerebrovascular disease modifiable risk factor

Madrid, March 2012.- the stroke remains one of the main causes of death and disability in the world and represents a burden considerable both economic and social for patients, their families and for society. In Spain, it is the leading cause of death in women and the third in men. It is also the leading cause of disability and the second of dementia. High blood pressure is the most closely related to cerebrovascular disease modifiable risk factor.

For this reason, a group of professionals from different medical specialties (internal medicine, Neurology, family medicine) have created the study group on hypertension and brain (GEHYC) in order to advance the scientific understanding of etiopathogenic hypertensive brain injury mechanisms, as well as to adopt guidelines diagnostic and therapeutic in primary prevention and secondary of this disease. The announcement of its creation has taken place in the framework of the seventeenth national meeting of the Spanish society of hypertension – Spanish League for the fight against Arterial hypertension (SEH – LELHA), with the collaboration of the laboratories Chiesi Spain.

The GEHYC will stimulate the general interest on hypertension and its relationship with cerebrovascular disease, to promote studies, research, publications, training, the creation of protocols as well as guides for action in the primary and secondary prevention of cerebrovascular disease. They will create a web page to provide a scientific awareness and achieve a greater interactivity between members and collaborators of the Group; and so, they will collaborate with scientific societies and other labour groups interested in the relationship between hypertension and cerebral impact.

The study group on hypertension and brain is composed by the DRA. Cristina Sierra unit of hypertension and Vascular risk of service of medicine internal of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, responsible for its coordination; and by the members of the Group founder – Advisor: Dr. José Alvarez-Sabín, of the Neurology service of the Hospital Vall d´Hebrón of Barcelona; Dr. Pedro closet, the unity of hypertension and Vascular risk of the service of internal medicine of the Hospital General de L´Hospitalet of Barcelona; Dr. Luis Castilla, unit of hypertension and Vascular risk of the service of internal medicine of the Hospital of the mercy of Seville; the DRA. María Isabel Egocheaga, health Madrd Oza Island Center family medicine; Dr. Antonio Gil, of the service of Neurology of the Hospital Gregorio Maranon de Madrid; and Dr. Jaime Masjuan of the Neurology service of the Hospital Ramón y Cajal in Madrid.
