Dual Pathology: the challenge of the training of professionals

Spain, 2011-October has concluded the second Congress of Dual pathology, addictive behaviors and other mental disorders. Experts point to the common origin of addiction and other mental illnesses that share common brain substrates and factors. The difficulty of diagnosing patients who suffer from addiction and other mental disorders, causes an increase in morbidity and mortality in the population

The dual pathology, i.e. the coexistence of an addictive disorder with another classic psychiatric disorder (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, etc), is a clinical reality that is widely detected by mental health professionals. Spanish and international epidemiological studies have confirmed the high prevalence of these disorders. There are very important advances in knowledge of the neurobiological, genetic conditions and neuroimaging, both patients with addictive disorders and in the dual.

Given the high prevalence of these patients, changes in treatment and approach employers has identified a great need for training in dual pathology for all mental health professionals. To achieve an adequate assistance to the population, training in dual pathology must be a priority especially for professionals who are forming.
