Hospitals in the community of Madrid was diagnosed with almost 1,500 myeloma in 2011.

Madrid, may 2012.- the Minister of health, Javier Fernández-Lasquetty, attended last Monday 7 to the presentation of myeloma Spaina new Association integrated into Spanish Association of people affected by Lymphoma, myeloma and leukemia (AELAL). The Association was created in order to meet the needs of patients diagnosed multiple myeloma in Spain.

Multiple myeloma is the second most common type of blood cancer after Hodgkin’s lymphoma and is a disease that affects more men than women, mainly people over 60 years of age.

Most public hospitals include the specialties of Oncology and Hematology with a high level of complexity in its portfolio of services. 1,457 Myeloma in 25 of the 36 hospitals in the region, which have been 20.038 hospital stays have been diagnosed throughout 2011.

Fernández-Lasquetty closed the Act involving Begoña Barragán, President of aeal members, Dr. Carmen Burgaleta, President of the Spanish society of Haematology and haemotherapy and head of Department at the Prince of Asturias Hospital, and Dr. Juan José Lahuerta, Chief of the service of Haematology and haemotherapy in the Hospital 12 de Octubre.

The Adviser expressed its appreciation for the work of the associations of patients as ” an irreplaceable activity that we consider complementary to the care and involving large direct assistance to patients and their families ”.

The community supports associations of patients the Ministry of health supports all initiatives that are for the benefit of those affected by different types of diseases as it is the case of myeloma Spain. In fact, it maintains a line of dialogue with more than 100 patients associations.

On the other hand, the community has signed various conventions which aim to improve the information offered to patients and families in the Madrid health service health centers, train professionals in caring for patients beyond their diseases and make known to the society, through the global days ”, rare diseases.

Health Awards

The combination of care, teaching and research has made the Haematology service of the Hospital de La Princesa has been honored last year with the Best Prize in Class to the best Spain Hematology service ”, granted by the Chair of Gaceta Sanitaria and health research of the Universidad Rey Juan Carloshaving achieved before the health Silver Medal of the community of Madrid.

Other hospitals that stand out for the number of patients diagnosed and treated with myeloma are the Hospital Universitario Gregorio Marañón, Hospital Universitario Ramón and Cajal, Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, Hospital Universitario La Paz and University Hospital of Getafe.
