Madrid. January of 2013- hospitals in the network of the Ministry of health of the community of Madrid carried out a total of 764 transplants of organs in 2012, one 3% increase over the previous year, and which involve more than 18% of the national total. Madrid has been the community that has made the largest number of cardiac, pancreatic, intestinal, multiviscerales, kidney transplants from cadaver donor and patients in pediatric age.

At the same time, the number of donor organs recorded in the Comunidad de Madrid increased 10% to reach the 236, which is the highest figure recorded in the region. The increase in donors, despite the steady decline in mortality, is produced by the large proportion of families who support donation, reaching 86%, compared to 82% in 2011, and the medical advances that make viable donations that years ago were not.

These and other data have been provided by the Health Minister, Javier Fernández-Lasquetty, accompanied by the director general of hospitals, Antonio Burgueño, and transplants, Carlos Chamorro, regional coordinator in the presentation of the balance of organ donation and transplantation in the community of Madrid in 2012.

Community hospitals have made 432 kidney transplants, 6% more than the previous year, 54 heart, 10% more pancreatic 27, 59% more than in 2011. The number of intestinal transplants has gone from 9 to 8, the lung is identical to 2011, with a total of 49 transplants, and the liver declined 9% and 194 have been.

Madrid has two hospitals with higher number of donors, October 12, with 63 donors, Hospital and Clínico San Carlos, 53, are Spanish with highest number of donor hospitals. Clínico San Carlos is also the national leading centre in donation stopped heart. Madrid centres are helping to extend donor programs stopped heart, through the training of professionals of hospitals of other autonomous communities.
