CARACAS (Reuters) – the Chairman of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, was submitted on Monday for an exploratory operation in the pelvic area, told Reuters a source close to the medical representative team, while maintaining the silence official on his State of health.

Chavez left the operating room on Monday night after 90 minutes of operation, the source said. A columnist for the Brazilian newspaper O Globo also published that the operation had already been made.

The health of Chavez, who has been 13 years in power, is a key factor for the political future of the country, which in October will hold general elections where the movement of the President will face an opposition front that has grown in popularity.

Chavez underwent surgery last year and had its removed of the pelvic area a tumor the size of a baseball. Last week announced that he had found a lesion in the same area.

The Socialist leader has been in charge of giving, in dribs and drabs, news about his State of health. But for long periods has maintained secrecy about his illness, which has increased a wave of rumors about his true state of health.
