i international breast cancer Symposium: new evidence and future developments

to review recent advances in breast cancer

Madrid, may 2012.- in the training plan developed by the IMO Group Foundation on 24 and 25 May will take place the I Symposium International DE CÁNCER DE MAMA: NEW EVIDENCE AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS. The aim main Symposium, is the review techniques diagnostic and treatment in one of the types of cancer higher incidence in the population.

Foundation, the Clinical Hospital of Madrid, the Symposium, Hospital Gregorio Marañón and the IMO group, Madrid Institute of Oncology, jointly organized this event of formative nature which will bring together leading specialists in surgery, medical and radiation oncology, nursing etc.; among them can be highlighted to Dr. Antonio Burgess, CEO of Madrid hospitals; Dr. Carlos Vázquez, President of the Spanish society of Senology and breast pathology; Dr. César Nombela, Professor of Microbiology of the Complutense University of Madrid; Dr. José Maria Roman, director of the unit of pathology breast of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid; Dr. Manuel de las Heras, head of the Oncology radiation of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid; Dr. Joseph Samblás, President of the IMO group; Dr. Miguel Martin, Chief of the service of Oncology medical of the Hospital Gregorio Marañón in Madrid, the Dr. Eduardo Díaz-Rubio Chief service medical oncology and director of the Institute of Oncology and Hematology of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos de Madrid and Dr. Phillip Poortmans, the Department of radiation oncology of the Institute Dr. Bernard Verbeel in of Tiburgo (the Netherlands).

Dr. Samblás, President of the IMO Group Foundation, pointed out the contribution that this institution has been developing in the promotion of the teaching area and in clinical research. Believe that this symposium is one of the best examples of the outstanding work of collaboration in the academic field that the IMO Group Foundation has been carrying. Hold an event of this magnitude in a referral Hospital in the academic activity as the Clinical Hospital of Madrid and with the support of the Hospital Gregorio Marañón puts the IMO Group Foundation in pride of place both in the training of health professionals and the dissemination of new advances in the treatment of cancer ”.

In addition, Dr. Samblás, ensures that the IMO Group Foundation has established different collaboration agreements with public and private entities, scientific societies, which are allowing healthcare specialists in training high-tech resources to fight against cancer. Through the work of dissemination of the IMO Group Foundation in different forums, such as courses, seminars and even the master in advanced technological applications in radiation oncology, are making optimizing and upgrading the training of professionals in the treatments more innovative in the field of radiation oncology and radiosurgery ”

along in 2012 the IMO Group Foundation so far have developed a comprehensive training programme: course theoretical-practical helical radiotherapy – TomoTherapy, practical theory course of advanced radiosurgery techniques, Conference: radiosurgery reality and future in collaboration with the Royal National Academy of Medicine (RANM). All these training activities have been a prestigious cast of national and international first level from different health specialties teachers such as: radiation oncology, neurosurgery, Radiophysics and physics, medical oncology, internal medicine, psycho-Oncology and nursing. In the coming months will be just more courses and workshops such as: VII oncological Conference in collaboration with the H.G.U Ramón y Cajal in Madrid (September 26-28), course theoretical-practical radiotherapy Intraoperatoria (18-19 October).

Another of the objectives of the symposium international EN CÁNCER DE MAMA I is lay the groundwork for setting up comprehensive breast pathology units that allow to optimize the health management of the process of this disease. In just 5 days it is already possible to treat with radiotherapy helical – TOMOTHERAPY for breast cancer.

The trend is to address breast cancer, as it is happening in other tumour types, with a comprehensive and personalized approach based on clinical characteristics of each patient. During this symposium the mod. Doctor of the IMO group, the Dr. Hugo Marsiglia will present the results of radiotherapy treatment helical – TomoTherapy applying a new therapeutic protocol that reduces the number of brachy treatment sessions. It’s the hipo-fraccionamiento or accelerated irradiation, allowing the treatment of women with breast cancer achieving greater efficiency, reducing to just 5 days the duration of treatment and minimizing the side effects of the same. According to Dr. Hugo Marsiglia, “thanks to the accelerated irradiation of the breast with TomoTherapy, managed to shorten the overall treatment time, from 6 and a half weeks that lasts the conventional Protocol to 1 single week. This technique is particularly indicated in women aged over 60, with small breast tumors without affected nodes and with estrogen receptor positivos´´.

Custom, accelerated and more accurately to the tumor treatments

Dr. Marsiglia explains that is this treatment that is revolutionizing the way of applying radiotherapy, ” our team of TomoTherapy – explains Dr. Marsiglia – it has integrated a scanner (CT) with which you get a tomo-imagen of the patient on a daily basis and in the same position of treatment. Thanks to this system we know the exact area where we are directing the beam of radiation, the precise dose we are providing and the volume of treatment ” and added in the IMO group thanks to this cutting-edge technology apply partial irradiation accelerated with TomoTherapy in certain breast tumors in which the irradiation of the breast is not precise, which is a new alternative therapy for many patients ”.

Lower toxicity and better quality of life for patients with breast cancer

For Dr. Marsiglia the hipo-fraccionamiento or accelerated treatments applied to breast cancer, i.e., more doses of radiation in less sessions, is changing the way to administer radiation therapy. Is now being advanced in studies customized according to the characteristics of each patient, new technology allows us to Protocol treatment more precise, more accelerated, raising and better adjusting the dose of radiation that it administers depending on factors such as the size of the tumor, the age, etc. The objective – stresses the specialist of the IMO group – is to apply greater brachy therapy against the tumor bed, while preserving the bodies closest to the injury, such as the heart, lungs, etc. I.e. to achieve better results in less time, with less side effects and therefore offering a better quality of life to patients ”.
The Group IMO has pioneered Spain in the implementation of the TomoTherapy in their specialized in radiation oncology centres. In particular of the miraculous in Madrid clinic is one of the most advanced to dispose of two teams of TomoTherapy Hi-Art System, one of them with volume-Direct. It’s a technique capable of managing a homogeneous and made treatment in breast cancer with hipo-fraccionamiento and a lower toxicity in healthy areas of the body
