IU, Willy Meyer, MEP asks the European Commission recognition of multiple chemical sensitivities and electromagnetic hypersensitivity in the States members of the EU.

Brussels, February 2013.- Willy Meyer has requested the Commission to urge the States members of the Union to include the Multiple chemical sensitivity and hypersensitivity electromagnetic as official within their respective health systems disease.

Meyer has addressed in writing to the Directorate-General of health and consumption of the Commission to express the need that these diseases are included in the international classification of diseases (ICD) and the respective national lists of occupational diseases. According to Meyer, “Legislation that protects all European patients and not try to avoid responsibilities by denying the existence of these diseases is necessary”. Currently these health problems tend to be denied or diagnosed as psychological problems which means that these patients “are a situation of complete defencelessness and double suffering, since beyond of suffer the painful effects come to be treated by the public health systems as mentally ill”, said Meyer.

Willy Meyer.

Multiple chemical sensitivities and electromagnetic hypersensitivity are diseases that is not already collected by the World Health Organization (who) as such, but the scientific community is making numerous discoveries and advances in the detection and assessment of these syndromes. These diseases often have been diagnosed as syndrome of chronic fatigue, resulting a crate of tailor where, in the absence of better rankings, typify these diseases.

The recognition of these diseases would, according to the MEP, the need to “apply existing rules in terms of electromagnetic radiation and exposure to harmful substances, as well as revising the current limits to ensure minimum impact on the health of the sick,” issue that its recognition would mean high costs. Currently tolerated electromagnetic and chemical pollution limits that prevent these sick to carry out a normal life, and it is for this reason that the Commission should take action to guarantee the right to a healthy life for all European citizens.
