Madrid, June of 2012- the foundation ECO (excellence and quality of Oncology) has released the name of the finalists of the first ECHO Awards, which recognize those individuals and institutions who, from different areas of societythey have contributed in the development of the medical oncology in Spain and in the fight against cancer.

Thus, the jury, composed by Trinidad Caldes (ASEICA), Juan Jesús Cruz (SEOM), Carlos Camps (ECO), Eduardo Díaz Rubio (RANM) and José Mª Rojas (Carlos III Institute), coincided in award to Dr. Jaime Sanz, the Association against cancer (AECC) and journalist José Luis de la Serna, as deserving of these awards.

The ECO to the best career clinic and scientific prize has been for Dr. Jaime Sanz Ortiz, head of medical oncology and service care palliative of the Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla (Santander) by founding and promote a referral service and pioneering in establishing and developing a programme of comprehensive care for the cancer patient.

For its part, the Spanish Association against cancer will receive the award of the relevant personality, for its more than 50 years of work in the fight against cancer in the fields of information, research and support and assistance to cancer patients and their families.

The prize echo to the best contribution Divulgativa in Oncology will be awarded to José Luis de la Serna, Deputy Director of the newspaper El Mundo and Chief Editor of the health area. The Foundation has sought to recognize his extensive career and joining the medical journalism, as well as his special sensitivity to issues of Oncology and their contributions to the health communication from the elmundo.es/health portal.

The echo Foundation, in collaboration with Lilly Oncology, will deliver these awards next Thursday 21 June, at a ceremony to be held in the Royal National Academy of medicine.
