Madrid, February 2012. Coinciding with the celebration of 2012 as a year for active ageing and intergenerational solidarity, federations and associations of retirees and pensioners of all Spain urge society to reflect on the social, revolution caused by the significant ageing of the population that will occur in the coming years.

Upcoming demographic projections force to think from now in a future society that is different to the current one in many respects. According to the President of the Democratic Union of pensioners, UDP, Luis Martín Pindado, the promotion of active ageing policies is an investment in social capital and economic opportunity for the country, as well as an inexhaustible vein for the creation of employment in the field of participation and the social construction of the Active older people ”.

According to the projection of population of Spain in the long term, INE in the 2049 over 64 years of age constitute 31.9% of the total population compared to 17.3% today.

In little more than 30 years the population of older people will increase from the current 8,000,000 to 15,000,000.

There are currently about 22 elderly by every hundred potentially active age, but in 2049 this relationship will have duplicate (53 percent each), i.e. two people age work for every older person (white book of active ageing). Must continue to take steps today to ensure that future generations can enjoy a public pension system adequate and sustainable ” expresses Pindado.

The working mass tends to diminish in the coming decades, and when the boom generations retire in 25 years, the relationship between major and potentially active population will alter significantly. Is necessary to establish new mechanisms of intergenerational solidarity that this increase in social spending rests not only with younger workers and consider the productive dimension, in its broadest sense, of older persons ”, indicates Pindado in this regard.
