Phone for help to quit smoking intervention is effective.

-a study by the Institute for research in primary care (IDIAP Jordi Gol) demonstrates that a brief motivational intervention by phone is more effective to quit to the common Council in consultation

– telephone motivational intervention has been a cessation of tobacco of the 11.5%, from the 4.79% who received only standard Council in consultation.

– Considered that in Spain there are some 56,000 annual deaths due to smoking.

Spain, June of 2011- the project was carried out on 248 patients smokers aged 18 to 75 years of a CAP of the Maresme. The objective was to check if a brief motivational speech made by telephone, 3 and 12 months of commencement speech, gave better results than the usual practice is done in consultation to help quit smoking. The conclusion, according to the rock Dra.Ingrid, principal investigator of the project is that”brief motivational intervention by phone seems to be more effective to stop smoking that the common Council in consultation”.

In fact, been achieved to 11.5% of smokers in the intervention group (who received the telephone motivational intervention for 3 to 12 months) to abandon tobacco, to 4.9% in the control group (who only received the common Council in consultation).

For the authors of the study, this project has a high applicability in primary care consultations, because he has shown: to) telephone intervention may be a preventive activity of primary care and which can be useful for any change of unhealthy life style. (

b) is a type of speech especially suitable for primary health care: innovative, of short duration, that does not require specific and easy to apply for the professional training

(c) telephone consultation is a tool that improves the accessibility of the AP patients, increasing coverage in not frecuentadores smoking, and enables a better time organization of the agenda of professionals.
