Prevention experts offer solutions on occupational hazards specific to the hospitality industry.

Spain, 2012-may main occupational risks associated with the hotel workers formed the axis of a breakfast organized on 24 April by the magazine training of security labour and by the BORREDÀ Foundation in the Hotel Meliá Castilla.

Risks psycho-social, ergonomic (manipulation of loads, forced postures, repetitive movements and instant) – triggering musculoskeletal disorders –, falls, cuts and punctures, the projection of pieces of food, boiling oil or crystals, electrical and fire risk, burns and exposure to chemicals are some of the factors to consider to avoid illnesses and for eradicate any hint of workplace accidents.

Professional profiles, functional areas according to the establishment (accommodation, catering, drinks …) and existing jobs (reception, floor, room, kitchen and cleaning staff waiters, etc.) are the main variables to contemplate for a correct analysis of the problems in catering.

These and other issues focused the interest of this Act included in the official programme of the week II for safety and health at work – promoted by the Regional Institute of safety and health at work of the community of Madrid (IRSST) –. María de Alarcón sea, general director of labour and Manager of the IRSST, was the personality responsible for inaugurating this professional breakfast.

The call was attended by Francisco Marquis, Deputy Technical Director of the Institute for safety and health at work (INSTH); José Antonio Ruiz, head of the area of occupational safety and health of NH Hoteles; Antonio Vega, Manager of occupational health of Zena group; Daniel Gómez, the Department of consulting and MSPLaborsalus prevention projects; Jorge Castaños, responsible for the service of prevention in Vips group; Cristina Rodríguez, responsible for a multinational hotel PRL; Eriz Ruiz, responsible of PRL from the Spanish Federation of hospitality (FEHR); and María Teresa González Rodríguez, head of the service of Labour Medicine, ergonomics and applied psycho-sociology of the IRSST.
