Madrid, March 2012.- for the third consecutive year, Psoriasis action, the State Association of patients of psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and their families, calls the Award for the best journalistic work on Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. 2012 Edition ”. This award is intended to recognize the work of those communication professionals who contribute to combat misinformation in lathe through well documented work psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis and information quality.

Eligible to award all those journalists currently engaged as such in a written Spain-based environment (both printed and online). The jury will select the best works presented and will be awarded a first prize worth 2,000 euros gross, a second of 1,500 euros and a third of 1,000 euros gross.

All those interested in participating in the contest may submit their work until October 1 of this year. The basis of the award and the form to participate are currently available on the web site of action Psoriasis.

It is estimated that the psoriasis, a chronic and autoimmune disease which manifests itself in the skin, affects approximately 650,000 people (i) in Spain (125 million worldwide). Of them, 6% to 40% develop also psoriatic arthritis (see). Psoriasis can involve a number of psychological problems who will be joining the purely physical effects that causes disease in patients. Some affected arrive to see diminished self-esteem and suffer social isolation, due, inter alia, to the rejection by some people that are unaware of what is psoriasis. Also, those who also have psoriatic arthritis have to be added to these effects pain and swelling of joints, so their quality of life is doubly affected. Other pathologies that are also associated with psoriasis are cardiovascular events and the metabolic syndrome.

Psoriasis action according to its purpose of improving the quality of life for these people, creates these awards in order to encourage and promote the work of public awareness around these pathologies.

Psoriasis is a State-level Association, composed of people with psoriasis and their families, which has been declared a public utility entity. In its nineteen years of existence it has become one of the most active and participatory State patients associations.

Throughout the year, Psoriasis action organizes activities, disseminates the latest research on treatments and supports those affected, with the aim of revindicar rights and increase the quality of life of patients.
