The 2011 Galien prizes have been delivered.

Madrid, 2011-December last Friday 25th of November there was the 21st edition of the Galien prizes and the eighth of the Elsevier Galien prizes at the Casino de Madrid. The ceremony was chaired by the Secretary of State for research, Philippe Pétriz, and the General Secretary of health, Alfonso Jiménez.

The Galien prizes, which are held in 12 countries, are placed by the high level of recipients, the composition of the jury and their international dimension, among the most important medical research awards.

Winners prizes Galien

Prix Galien medicinal product of the year was awarded to Mozobil ® (plerixafor), Genzyme laboratories, for its demonstrated effectiveness and make differential advantages over the currently existing drugs for the same indication.

In the category of best work researcher has been award-winning Professor Joan-Ramón Laporte Roselló, Professor of Pharmacology at the Department of Pharmacology, Therapeutics, and toxicology of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Chief of service of clinical pharmacology of Hospital Universitario Vall d ’ Hebron and general director of Fundació Institut Català of FarmacologEd, collaborating centre of the World Health Organization (who) for research and training in Pharmacoepidemiology.

Prof. Laporte Roselló has trained an entire generation of pharmacologists in Spain and Latin America, and in more than 100 occasions has been Advisor to the who, UNICEF and the World Bank.

And in the third category, the best innovation project has been awarded to the Dry Blood Spot Screening company, for the development of a methodology that allows to analyze specific parameters of Biochemistry from dried blood samples, with the aim of simplifying the preventionmass and individualized form of non-communicable and noncommunicable diseases in developed countries as in deprived communities with health resource-limited systems.

Winners Elsevier Galien

During the ceremony last night, were also delivered the Galien Elsevier Awards, which recognizes excellence and commitment to public and private institutions for the benefit of research and the promotion of health.

This year, were convened six categories, and the awards have been awarded to:

best strategy of investigación: awarded to Boehringer Ingelheim and Lilly, laboratories for their strategic partnership in the fight against diabetes. Through an agreement, both companies will develop and jointly marketed a series of drugs, diabetes currently, middle and end are at stages of development.

Best campaign Divulgativa and prevention in salud: awarded to Novartis Labs for the campaign ‘ gives voice to diabetes type 2 ’, an interactive exhibition and a pioneer in Spain which aims to inform and educate the population about the risks and prevention of type 2 diabetes guidelines.

Best attention to the paciente: awarded to Almirall laboratories for initiatives to help the patients to comply properly with the treatment of Sativex, a new drug to alleviate symptoms of spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis in patients resistant to other treatments.

Research in Inmunonutrición: awarded to Danone for their commitment to the health, nutrition and research work in the field of probiotics. The hand of the Pasteur Institute, Danone has studied the role of the probiotic Lactobacillus casei DN.114001 against seasonal flu.

Most innovative product in Dermofarmacia: given to the range of products LetiXer dry skin of laboratorios Leti. LetiXer is the most complete and innovative for the treatment of dry skin in their different degrees of severity. It is a breakthrough in the treatment of skin xerosis to restore the barrier function of skin, acting at the water, lipid and cell level.

Best communication campaign of an autocuidado: Medicine awarded to laboratories Ferrer for the communications campaign that has introduced Panadol in the world of the drug advertising, thus adapting to the new reality of pharmaceutical and health sector, and betting on responsible health self-care.

Some prizes with story

Prix Galien was born in France in 1970, under the leadership of the pharmacist Roland Mehl. Its name was inspired in the famous anatomist, physiologist, surgeon and researcher, Galien (Claudius Galen).

father of medicine, modern and pharmacological, his work has been a benchmark for the past 2,000 years. He was born in the year 129 ad in Pergamon, and studied at Smyrna, Corinth, and Alexandria, three centres of medicine historically known for its prestige. Galien discovered 473 original drugs from numerous substances of vegetable and mineral origin. It was the first scientist who codified the art of preparing Active drug ingredients and substances from plants.

Each year, and in each of the 12 countries where surrenders the Galien, the jury, made up of prestigious doctors, surgeons and pharmacologists, recognized with these awards the implicit value of the scientific, technical, social and human work done by individuals, teams and public and private institutions at national and international level.
