figures of blood glucose is more difficult to control in people with type 2 diabetes.

VIII course of theoretical-practical update in Diabetes Mellitus type 2 Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid (October 19-21)

– close to 5 million Spaniards suffer from type 2 diabetes, and half do not know

– has so far not been confirmed be tighter glycemic control decreases the risk of having a cardiovascular event

Madrid, 2011-October in Spain, type 2 diabetes affects 13.8 per cent of people, i.e., almost 5 million Spaniards, although 6% don’t know. These figures are increasing due to, among other factors, the sedentary lifestyle, overweight and obesity.

In diabetes type 2 is essential to control not only the blood glucose, but other cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension, lipids, body weight, etc. ”, explains Dr. Lucrecia Herranz de la Morena, in the service of Endocrinology and nutrition of the Hospital Universitario La Paz of Madrid. This fact, together with the role of the family physician in the management of type 2 diabetes, entails the need for specific training on this condition that these specialists.

For this reason, the Foundation for Diabetes held last week VIII course of theoretical-practical update in Diabetes Mellitus type 2, with the collaboration of Hospital Universitario La Paz of Madrid, aimed at promoting the deepening the knowledge about the disease in the family medicine. According to Dr. Herranz de la Morena, transmit the experience of a Diabetes unit to primary care physicians in relation to type 2 diabetes, which undoubtedly requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary treatment is ”.

Of all the cardiovascular risk factors which presented people with type 2 diabetes, in the words of Dr. Herranz of moray eels, the most difficult controlling is the Glycemic levels or blood glucose. In this regard, while we have effective drugs to treat hypertension and Dyslipidemia, blood glucose control requires the self-control of the person with diabetes, which requires knowledge about food and diet, on ways to adjust the treatment, etc. ”.To this end, this expert emphasizes the need that people with type 2 diabetes – not only in cases of type 1 diabetes in which the diabetológica education promotes more – received this training.

Deepening and discussion

During the course, consisting of theoretical training sessions and practical modules, have analyzed the most relevant aspects in the diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of diabetes type 2: Obesity in the type 2 diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, peripheral vascular disease, treatment of Dyslipidemia and hypertension, vascular complications, etc. it’s topics with very current, not only because of the progress we have achieved in recent years, but also in the search for consensus in some of them ”, explains Dr. Herranz de la Morena. One of them is the desirability of enhancing the treatment of blood glucose levels to prevent cardiovascular events. So far, there have been 3 studies to see if being more strict with the objective of control on glucose levels (defined with a hemoglobin glycosylated hemoglobin of 7 or less) decreased the risk of having a cardiovascular event – explains the doctor. However, these studies have produced no positive data on the subject ”.

Another issue that has been discussed is the benefits of diagnosis by hemoglobin glycosylated hemoglobin rather than through the basal blood glucose or postprandiales figures after a shot of glucose. According to Dr. Herranz de la Morena, change the diagnosis of basal or postprandiales figures criterion to hemoglobin glycosylated hemoglobin would result in an increase in the cost of the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and a decrease in the number of cases that are diagnosed ”.
