The IDIBELL researchers create a software application allowing statistical analysis of gene expression data online.

the application is called BootstRatio and uses techniques of resampling.

Spain, April 2012.- The journal Computers in Biology and Medicine has published an article about the new computer application BootstRatio, created by researchers at the Institute of biomedical research of Bellvitge (IDIBELL), allowing statistical analysis of gene expression data online. The application is accessible via http://regstattools.net/br and her are already using scientists from around the world.

The researchers of the research group of the IDIBELL, led by Virginia Nunes, human Molecular Genetics were a problem to provide the results of the statistical analysis of gene expression data of significance. The majority of the statistical calculations to compare gene expression data assume a normal distribution of these data and this distribution is not always real.

From this problem and together with Ramon Clèries, expert in statistics of the group for the prevention and Control of cancer the IDIBELL, decided to work in a statistical analysis, using resampling techniques to generate a hypothetical distribution of data without starting any initial distribution, and nail the data in understandable language for the scientist.

This is how the BootstRatio application which can be accessed from a remote server was born. Are entered data and in few time program mailed the results in an understandable language for the scientist ”, explained Miguel López de Heredia, CIBERER researcher of the research group of the IDIBELL human Molecular Genetics. Statisticians and biologists sometimes talk about different languages. This new tool allows a biological interpretation of the results of the statistical analysis ”.

Clèries explained that the application BootstRatio it is very easy to use and does not require statistical specialization ”.
