Madrid, November 2011- The Prince of Asturias Hospital organized a Conference on atopic dermatitis, a disorder characterized by intense itching and dry skin. The Conference was held last Friday 18 at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Alcalá, with free and open access. Atopic dermatitis is of hereditary genetic disease whose symptoms can be associated to other manifestations such as asthma or allergy rinoconjuntivales.

Critical injury of atopic dermatitis is eczema, more prevalent in childhood, that appears in the first months of life to manifest themselves in the so-called outbreak of infant ”, which can be acute, generalized or centered in the folds of arms, elbows, knees and face.

As there is the development of the baby, atopic dermatitis usually focus on the areas of flexura. For adults, the lesions are more localized. Although the disease curse by outbreaks, the skin of patients, whether children or adults, need hydration of permanently, dryness is the main feature of this pathology.

The fall and winter are more complicated stations for these patients, as they increase the symptoms. In spring and summer decreases because the Sun has a stabilizing function. Outbreaks may be triggered by stress and associated diseases that weaken the body. Severe atopic dermatitis needs general treatment with oral medications that alleviate the intense itching and swelling.

Self-care of the skin

Skin care is essential to reduce skin aggression involving this pathology: the shower instead of bathing, it is recommended not to rub the skin, use extrahidratantes soaps and body lotions after showering, choose clothing with a high percentage of cotton and not use colony (due to the alcoholic basis and perfume containing the colonies and can penetrate in) (the skin of the patient generating allergies).

The Dermatology service of the Prince of Asturias University Hospital annually serves nearly 500 patients (between children and adults) affected by this dermatological disease, either mild manifestations or with outbreaks severe.

This Conference is enmarccó in the activities of the Science week organized by the General Directorate of universities and research of the Ministry of education and employment of the Of Madrid and was held last Friday 18 at 10: 00 in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Alcalá.
