Madrid, January 2012.- Hospital helps expectant mothers who so wish the possibility to donate the umbilical cord of the baby in a universal manner, autologous or directed. The cells contained in the umbilical cord can be used for patients with diseases of the bone marrow, such as leukemias and lymphomas. This donation does not imply any risk to the mother or the baby.

There are three types of donations of umbilical cord: the universal altruistic (blood from the umbilical cord is preserved frozen at the center of transfusion of Madrid for use when need it other patients) concerted family autologous (the collection and storage of blood performed family autologous purposes) and directed (to a diagnosed immediate family of a susceptible to disease of) (be cured by stem cell transplantation).

In the universal donation, information about the process is provided to pregnant women in primary care or specialized care. It is a voluntary and altruistic, action with a clear social benefit, without risk to the baby or mother. The donor must be of legal age, not legally, disabled with pregnancy controlled no history of communicable diseases (genetic, hereditary or infectious) and give their consent before the birth.

Directed donation, the application takes place two months before the birth, along with a clinical report of the future recipient of the donation, to assess its indication. In the case of genetic diseases, it is necessary to provide the clinical report that dismisses the existence of the genetic anomaly in the donor.

The condition to be treated in the family of the donor must be included in a set list of diseases, which include neoplastic (leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and myelodysplastic syndrome), not neoplastic and/or congenital diseases (combined immunodeficiency congenital, metabolic diseases of deposit)(, medullar aplasia of Fanconi).

Family allogeneic or autologous donation aims to the collection, storage and subsequent use of cord blood, whose conditions are concluded between the pregnant woman and the depository company of this tissue. The pregnant woman informs the delivery to the contracted company to collect the sample (who is in charge of transporting the samples to the tissue bank private storage) and the hospital carried out the extraction of the same.

Informed consent and control of the material during the process

The pregnant woman delivers the consent signed on the delivery day at the lambing. If the donation is directed and blood can not be used for the intended family, be used for transplantation in other sufferers (if it is not useful for transplant can be used for other alternative therapeutic or research). Prior to delivery are carried out on the donor mother serological studies and histocompatibility.

All samples (bag, tube and bottle) are identified and packaged with the name and surname of the mother.
