Madrid, November of 2011- the Hospital Prince of Asturias organized a round table on psoriasis, a genetic disorder with associated diseases and a great emotional impact on the patient’s life. Held Friday, November 11 at 10: 00, in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Alcalá.
Psoriasis is a genetic disease, although it has a very dominant inheritance to move inexorably from parents to children. The most common manifestation is the emergence in the skin of Red plates, scaly, preferential location in elbows, knees, scalp and lumbosacral area. It can evolve in various stages, but it is a chronic disease.
The emotional impact is very important in the quality of life of the patient psoriatic, affecting their social, work and family life. The impact is highlighted also on the school environment when it comes to pediatric patients.
Psoriasis treatments are multiple and individualized and adapted to each patient. Pharmacological topical treatment with steroids or derivatives of vitamin D or both is customarily used at the same time, immunosuppressive or products queratolÃticos to merge the scale. For moderate and severe forms, there are systemic treatment instituted depending on many factors.
The importance of the associated diseases
Although some patients with psoriasis have a usual itching skin, the primary concern of physicians are diseases associated with psoriasis. Among them we highlight the arthropathy and metabolic syndrome.
The Psoriasis arthropathica causes lesions with pain and deformity of the joints, which are dealt with by the rheumatologist, and may invalidate the patient’s life. On the other hand, the metabolic syndrome can have worse consequences on patients young psoriasÃcos, smoking and alcohol consumers and increase of cholesterol, triglycerides, and sugar can lead to coronary heart disease.
Psoriasis affects approximately between 2% and 2.5% of the population. Appearance is very varied, from nails to larger areas of skin. These patients must be involved in caring for their health, measures toilet/diet to prevent the co-morbidities. The service of Dermatology of the Hospital Universitario Prince of Asturias annually serves nearly 300 patients affected by this dermatological disease.
