The residential model debate.

Issues that arise in countries with advanced social policies include the definition of the models of care of the future for people in a situation of dependence, which must be sustainable economically, at the time of being presided over by the notion of human rights and respect for the preferences of the people who need support and care.

In the field of residential care, trends point to that we need many more places of accommodation due to the loss of family capacity to follow, as hitherto, assuming care at his own expense. But what homes are that we want for our parents or ourselves when we need them?.

Although the centers that we have in Spain have improved in recent years in quality of care, remain factors for improvement show produced research. The fundamental problems of people living in much of the traditional residences are: loss of control over one’s life, restriction of the possibility of making choices about everyday activities, progressive depersonalization, deterioration of self-esteem, weakening of social relations, etc.

Architectural design and model of care, in which these issues will be addressed to make homes more attractive to people who need them, without that it means an increase in costs.

The latest international trends, which will be presented at the Conference, show experiences in which the accommodation in those who receive care are household, cozy spaces where people decorate their room with their furniture and objects, are taken into account your preferences and desires, are filled with meaningless daily activitiesfamilies can access at any time to the Centre, there is scope of schedules to get up or lying down, eat, etc.

Shaft behind the design and the person-centered care model is respect for human dignity, and from it, promoting personal autonomy, the realization of the rights of persons living in residential homes, offer support to minimize as far as possible their dependency statuspromote participation in the life of the Center for families and loved ones, etc.

To achieve progress in this new model, it is necessary to flee normative stiffness governing part of the existing residences and offer support interventions tailored to each person who attend. The work of professionals is essential for this.

And also presented their proposals and participated in the discussion representatives of older persons and persons with disabilities.
