The SCA TEAM has already selected the first 5 members of the women’s team that will participate in the Volvo Ocean Race.

el Team SCA, the only female team in the next edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, which will take place in 2014-2015, has been appointed the first five crew that officially become part of the team: Carolijn Brouwer (HOL), Sophie Cizcek (AUS), Sam Davies (GBR), Annie Lush (GBR) and Liz Wardley (AUS).

Spain, April of 2013. Twenty candidates have undergone rigorous training at the base of the SCA in Puerto Calero, Lanzarote team. The program has included both physical and strength, as medical and testing navigation on the boat of VO70, SCA Care tests. And all under the watchful eye of a team of trainers with more than fifteen years of experience in competitions around the world.

Have been really impressed by the quality of the candidates. Ten years have passed since the last time that a women’s team participated in this competition and the level of professionalism and qualifications is much higher now, so none of us can underestimate the task that lies ahead ”, commented Richard Brisius, director of the SCA Team. The selected five have extensive experience in all fields from the navigation alone at sea until the Olympics and Match Racing. The chosen have managed to carve out a niche in this sport considered still predominantly male.

All of them are navigators with innate talent, regardless of their sex. The SCA Team provides the tools and structure that enable them to compete on equal terms in this classic race around the world. It would be nice to think that through our efforts we can lead a new generation of women to breaks in a race with crew in the open sea. A team of women in this race should be a completely normal not an extraordinary thing ” concludes Brisius.

This first team will stay in Lanzarote until the start of the Volvo Ocean Race in September of 2014, and will continue training in the waters surrounding the island until the start of the race in the fall of 2014. The delivery of the boat for the race, TEAM SCA VO65, will take place at the beginning of the autumn. In its 40 years of history just four women’s teams participated in the race, being the last that did, the Amer Sports Two in the 2001-02 Edition.
