Madrid, December of 2011. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has been the scene of the surrender of the 2011 Mataix awards of the Spanish Academy of nutrition and Food Sciences, one of the awards of the most significant of the nutrition, feeding the Spanish in this edition has highlighted the work done by Coca-Cola Spain as best business initiative by his constant support for the training of professionals of health in the area of nutrition and knowledge about hydration as an emerging area of nutrition.

The third edition of the awards Mataix, the Spanish Academy of nutrition aims to keep the memory alive and the work of José Mataix Verdú (Yecla 1941 – Granada 2008) one of the most important Spanish nutrition such as Grande CoviánGregorio Varela, Marañón, Bengoa or Turró among many others, whose life was closely linked to research into the Mediterranean diet and olive oil.

In the category of ‘ better private initiative or business ’ the award of the Academy has gone to the Edition 2011 in Coca-Cola Spain, for the constant support of the company for the continuing education of health professionals in the area of nutrition, and the impetus given to the research and knowledge about hydration as an emerging field in nutrition. The prize, awarded by the Academy’s Vice President, Javier Aranceta, and picked up by Rafael Urrialde, responsible for nutrition and health of Coca-Cola Spain, has been awarded ex aequo with the company José Sánchez Peñate for its innovation in the dairy sector.

Next to this category, in the third edition of the Mataix awards given also the award to the vital career for a lifetime dedicated to nutrition, which was awarded to Magdalena Villanueva Cabrera, Peruvian-born nurse and creator of the Canarian Breastfeeding Association; the award to the best institutional initiative, the Mediterranean diet Foundation, driving the inclusion of the Mediterranean diet on the list of UNESCO’s intangible heritage; and with them the prize for the best researcher in human nutrition, awarded to the researcher Jose M. Ordovas Muñoz, Professor of nutrition at the TUFS University of Boston, and Director of the Centre for cardiovascular diseases in the community of Madrid, with 78 international in human nutrition papers published during 2010.

Workshop on nutrition and hydration

The 2011 Mataix awards ceremony coincided with the workshop on advances in nutrition and hydration organized by the Spanish Academy of food science and nutrition and in which participated the members of the Academy. For two days (12 and 13 December) recognised experts in the field of nutrition and health have been addressed and discussed the progress in research on the Mediterranean diet; nutrition, hydration and cognitive function; obesity and genetics; hydration as emerging science, etc.

During the course of the day have appointed new scholars associate the doctors Cristina Campoy Folgoso, the University of Granada and Pedro Betancor León, of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
