(www.neomundo.com.ar) as it was announced a few days ago by part of the team coordinator of a group of scientists is dedicated to advancing the most complete available census of marine species, and whose summary was published in a recent edition of scientific journal PLoS Biology, deep currently our planet some 8.700.000 species.

The most interesting of all is that, according to estimates, still discovering and classifying 86 per cent of all species living on the Mainland and 91% of which inhabit the seas.

Therefore there is a vast majority of living species that – – have not yet been discovered, and much less described or i cataloged by the zoology.

The work done by the team realizes that the number of species that live on the Mainland around the 6.5 million species; whereas the inhabitants of the sea are approximately 2.2 million species (this means that about 25% of the total number of species inhabit the Ocean).

Know this number is not one minor issue, as explained by Dr. Boris Worm – one of the leaders of the study – “our work is key to know how many species populate our biosphere and is an indispensable element to plan properly and with certain data the future econlógico in important areas such as biodiversity”.

At the same time the expert highlighted another important detail: the lists of species legally protected by the International Union for the conservation of nature (which is known as the “IUCN Red List”), because they are in danger of extinction; protect, according to this latest study, less than one 1% of the species on the planet.
