WASHINGTON (AP) – the health authorities of United States approved on Wednesday the first vaccine that defends against four strains of the common flu and also offers protection against influenza virus.

FluMist Quadrivalent vaccine laboratory MedImmune, protects against two strains of influenza A and two influenza B.

Previously, all vaccines contained two variants of influenza A and influenza B, chosen annually by specialists based on their potential spread among the population. To have an additional variant B influenza increases the likelihood that the vaccine protects against the disease, said in a statement the federal institution (FDA) food and drug administration.

The new vaccine, similar to a previously approved FluMist is a nasal spray containing weakened strains of the virus.
