Madrid, February 2012.- the BIAL Foundation has opened the deadline for submission of nominations for the 15th edition of the BIAL Award”considered one of research awards most prestigious European in the area of health. “” With a total of 340,000 euro, this award encompasses two categories: the Grand Prix BIAL of medicine “and the BIAL award in clinical medicine”.

According to Luis Portela, President of the BIAL Foundation, “are becoming more European and American that have shown interest in the BIAL award and researchers competing with Portuguese scientists in reference ”.” In this edition of the BIAL award, Luis Portela said that “the BIAL Foundation’s main objective is to attract the best professionals of Portugal in addition to prominent specialists in health from around the world, rewarding and thereby encouraging research medical. ”

Also, the BIAL award in clinical medicine “, worth 100,000 euros, is awarded to a free theme that goes to clinical practice.” In this edition the honorable mentions have an allocation of € 10,000 each and the jury may choose up to four works with this distinction.

In addition to economic value, the BIAL award includes exclusive edition of nearly ten thousand copies of the winning entry of the BIAL Award for clinical medicine ” and others of the winning entries, which will be disseminated freely among health professionals.

The jury of the prize BIAL 2012 Edition will be chaired by Professor António de Sousa Pereira and shall consist of representatives of the Portuguese medical school as the teacher Miguel Castelo-Branco (Faculty of Ciências da Saúde – Univ.) (Beira Interior), Maria João Marques Gomes (Faculty of Ciências medical of the University of Nova of Lisbon), Adelino Moreira Leite (School of medicine – u. Porto), António Martins da Silva (Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar – Univ). (Porto), Luís Providência (School of medicine – Univ.) winning works

the BIAL Foundation established the BIAL award in 1984. Since the year 2000, in order to increase the prestige of the award and to expand activities of the BIAL Foundation, established its internationalisation and since then the BIAL award has been distinguished several international teams.

In the edition of 2000 the BIAL award distinguished Prof. Jesús Egido of the Fundación Jiménez Díaz; in 2004 again awarded the Spanish research with the attribution of the Grand Prix BIAL of medicine ” to Prof. Ignacio Melero and Prof. Jesús Prieto of the University of Navarra; in the 2006 Edition was awarded the Belgian researcher, Prof. Daniel Pipeleers, Brussels Free University, and in the last edition, in 2010, the BIAL award distinguished Prof. Vladimir Hachinski, Professor of Neurology at the University of Western Ontario, Canada.

Since its inception in 1984, the BIAL award has analyzed 518 works candidates and has involved 1,156 researchers, physicians and scientists. In its fourteen editions, this prize has distinguished 227 authors, has awarded 87 works, and have been distributed free of charge among the medical class more than 30 award-winning works, a total of around 300,000 copies.

the BIAL Foundation is an institution of public utility, established in 1994 by the BIAL laboratories jointly with the Council of the rectors of Portuguese universities.
