Tomelloso, 2011-October 1990 the UN General Assembly established the international day of older persons, in order to encourage the taking of conscience about the value of the prolongation of life and the benefits that it can reach to live a more harmonious world and just.

The international day of older persons is celebrated annually on October 1, and aims to recognize the contribution of seniors to human and economic development, as well as to highlight the opportunities and challenges associated with global demographic ageing.
