Oviedo, November of 2011- the Dr. Josep guard Serecigni, senior consultant in Psychiatry of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona and Vice President of SOCIDROGALCHOL had indicated last Friday at a press conference at the 15th National Congress of Psychiatry, to persons with mental illness are only aggressive behaviors (against if themselves or against others) whenalso of mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse are ”. Dr. Guard noted that conduct violent linked to the abuse of alcohol and drug is independent of which the person has mental disorder or does not have ”.

Dr. guard indicated that the abuse of alcohol and drugs (AAYD) increases the risk of violence up to 7 times understood as homicide, physical assault, sexual assault (rape, coercion, abuse of minors, sexual harassment), illegal threats, intimidation, theft, Pyromania ”. Persons with mental illness who do not take alcohol or drugs do not have aggressive behaviors. Persons with mental illness may be more aggressive behaviors and/or auto-destructivos when he is also addicted to alcohol and drugs. But, any person who abuses alcohol and drugs, is more likely to introduce violent behaviour, has or does not have in addition a mental illness. The effective prevention of aggressive behaviour and suicide in the mentally ill, required lengthy treatment of the abuse of alcohol and drug ”.

1 Exists some prejudice about if people with a mental disorder may be more violent than other people behaviour, but it’s a misconception, as evidenced by recent studies.

2 Mentally ill studies have found that:

to. Mental patients only have aggressive behaviors (against whether themselves or against others) when, in addition to mental illness, have drug and Alcohol abuse.

d. The majority of people taking drugs take not one but several at the same time, and alcohol is the second drug, in 90% of people taking more than one drug.

4. The person who abuses alcohol and drugs is more likely to make violent behaviour and also end up being victimized by aggression of others.

5. This increase in violent behaviour in persons who abuse alcohol and drugs is independent of who the person is also a mental disorder or does not have it.
