Barcelona, December of 2011- USP ophthalmic of Barcelona, ophthalmic surgical center with more than four decades devoted to eye health, has launched a social programme for facilitating access to cataract surgery patients with limited resources. This program aims to offer special rates to those affected by this disease, that is associated with the aging process that greatly reduces the quality of life, and that the current economic environment have no access to the normal rates.

The increase in life expectancy has led to a substantial increase in the prevalence of cataracts which Spain affects more than 47% of the population: 20,000 million people (according to data from the twenty-sixth Congress of the society Spanish of eye surgery in 2011) in particular, its prevalence is 50 per cent between 65 and 74 years, and 70 per cent above the age of 75.

The disease we know under the name of cataracts is lens opacification. Under normal conditions, the lens is transparent, light rays pass through it and focus on the retina with the help of the cornea, thereby producing a sharp image. If the lens becomes opaque, usually due to age, the light rays do not go correctly to the interior of the eye, resulting in a blurred image.

The cataract increases the risk of accident, falls or burns, in patients who suffer.

USP ophthalmic of Barcelona has a long history working with entities without donating ophthalmic material to developing countries. With the current campaign, USP ophthalmic of Barcelona, aware of the difficulties faced by many families of their closest environment, began a line of CSR-oriented community environment for facilitating access to cataract surgery.
